Embalenhle, Mpumalanga – Two men are dead following a shocking shooting at a tavern in Extension 15, Embalenhle, on New Year's Day. The incident, which occurred at approximately 11pm, has sparked a massive police manhunt for the armed suspect responsible.

According to provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, authorities were alerted to the shooting by concerned community members. "Upon arrival at the scene, police found two male victims lying on the ground and covered with blankets, while community members were gathered outside the premises. Both victims were later identified as residents of Embalenhle," Mdhluli confirmed.

Eyewitness accounts paint a disturbing picture of the events that unfolded. The suspect, described as wearing a distinctive white jacket, allegedly arrived at the tavern and immediately opened fire. He then fled the scene, only to return moments later.

"It was during his return when he reportedly shot both victims," Mdhluli stated. "It is also alleged that he randomly fired some shots as he fled the scene." The motive for the brutal attack remains unknown.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched a 72-Hour Plan, an intensive operation designed to swiftly apprehend the suspect. Detectives are working tirelessly to gather evidence and follow up on leads. The distinctive white jacket worn by the suspect is considered a key element in identifying him.

Police are urging anyone with information about the shooting, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward. Detective Captain Fanie Sindane is leading the investigation and can be contacted directly on 077 429 6817 or 017 631 8024. Alternatively, members of the public can call the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or share information via the MYSAPSAPP. All information received will be treated with the strictest confidence, and callers have the option to remain anonymous.

The acting provincial police commissioner, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, has expressed serious concern regarding the recent surge in violent incidents at taverns across the province. He has reiterated the SAPS's commitment to ensuring the safety of patrons and staff at these establishments.

"We continue to plead with liquor traders to ensure that they comply with safety regulations in their respective businesses," said Mkhwanazi. "In most instances like few days back, some traders were not happy when we raided their places, but our aim was and is to ensure safety for everyone."

Mkhwanazi's statement highlights the ongoing tension between law enforcement and some tavern owners regarding compliance with safety standards. The SAPS maintains that these operations are crucial for preventing crime and ensuring the well-being of the community.

The Embalenhle community is now grappling with the aftermath of this senseless act of violence. The loss of two lives has left families grieving and residents fearful. As the police investigation continues, the focus remains on bringing the perpetrator to justice and restoring a sense of security to the area. The SAPS is determined to track down the suspect and ensure that he faces the full consequences of his actions. The investigation continues.
