Tragedy Strikes Soweto Marathon: Mother of Two Dies After Being Hit by Taxi

Johannesburg – A tragic incident has marred the Soweto Marathon as a 45-year-old mother of two, Deziree du Plessis, has died in hospital from injuries sustained after being struck by a taxi during the race.

Du Plessis was taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital for treatment following the incident. The driver of the taxi, who allegedly forced his way onto the course in the path of the runners, has been arrested for reckless and negligent driving, and reports indicate he was intoxicated at the time.

The devastating news was shared by Du Plessis' sister, Marijke Miller, in a heartfelt Facebook post on Friday. "She fought so bravely, but Dezzi breathed her last this morning," Miller wrote. "We are hanging up Dezzi's earthly sneakers today; her race is complete."

The incident has cast a shadow over the Soweto Marathon, and further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses. The focus now shifts to supporting the family and loved ones of Deziree du Plessis during this incredibly difficult time.
