KZN Police Hunt Man Accused of Stabbing and Strangling Nephew

KwaZulu-Natal police have intensified their search for a 29-year-old man who allegedly stabbed and strangled his nine-year-old nephew before leaving him for dead in Chesterville earlier this year.

According to provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the incident happened in January when the child had gone to visit his grandfather. During the visit, Sduduzo Mavundla allegedly lured the boy to a bushy area not far from the family home.

Police said that once they were inside the bushes, Mavundla accused the child of disrespecting his grandfather. It was then, according to Netshiunda, that he allegedly began strangling the boy and stabbing him repeatedly until the youngster passed out.

The child later regained consciousness and managed to crawl towards the roadside, where he was found and assisted. By the time help arrived, police said, Mavundla had already spoken to family members and convinced them to report the child missing.

Following the incident, Mavundla was arrested and released on bail. However, he never returned to court. A warrant for his arrest was issued in September after he failed to appear, and police have been searching for him since.

Netshiunda said investigators are continuing with efforts to trace him and have appealed to anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward.

Members of the public with information are urged to contact Investigating Officer Captain Ndlovu on 082 411 5609, or call the Crime Stop number 08600 10111.
