JOOSTENBERG VLAKTE – The family of 78-year-old Susan Kok is in deep mourning after her body was discovered in an open field on Waarburgh Road, Joostenberg Vlakte. Ouma Susan, from Fisantekraal, had been missing since 8 November 2025, leaving her loved ones distraught and desperately searching for answers.

Susan Kok was last seen while visiting family in Joostenberg. She had been spending the night at her cousin's house on Joostenberg Vlakte when she mysteriously disappeared in the early hours of Sunday, 9 November 2025.

Her daughter, Shireen Christians, recounted the events leading up to her mother's disappearance: "I dropped her off on the Saturday at my cousin's place, and I went to work. I was going to pick her up on the Sunday afternoon, but in the morning, I got a message saying that my mother was gone and was no longer at my cousin's house."

The family's initial hope quickly turned to despair as they learned more about the circumstances surrounding Susan's disappearance. "When we got there, we were told that my mother left around 3am without saying anything," Christians explained. "But knowing my mother, she would never leave at that time of the morning, and she didn't have on her shoes, a warm jacket, cap, purse, or cigarettes. She was on medication because she has hypertension and diabetes."

Christians dismissed suggestions that her mother might have wandered off on her own. "They said a window was also open, maybe she jumped out of the window. I said she can't even lift her legs," she stated, emphasising her mother's physical limitations. She added, "She took a drink, but I can't say if she was drunk that time because they were chilling, but something like this has never happened. Even if she was under the influence, she doesn't just leave, especially around that time." Shireen also confirmed that her mother did not have any dementia or mental illness.

The devastating news arrived on the evening of 16 November 2025, a week after Susan went missing. Her body had been found dumped in an open field on Waarburgh Road.

"We are still waiting on the results of the autopsy to determine the cause of death," Christians said, her voice heavy with grief. "The children were playing when they found the body and informed their parents. She was lying in her bra and pants, and her top was lying next to her. She had marks on her body, and her face was blue. I am not sure if it was because she was laying too long."

The discovery has left the family with unanswered questions and a profound sense of loss. "My mother was found on an open piece of land. We are not coping, we have so many questions that cannot be answered, and seeing my mother lay like that makes it worse. Whatever happened to her, she did not deserve it," Christians lamented.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that the Kraaifontein police have registered an inquest for investigation following the discovery of the body in the open field on Waarburgh Road, Joostenberg Vlakte, on Sunday, 16 November, at approximately 7:38pm.

"The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation. A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death," Sergeant Twigg stated.

The police are appealing to anyone with information about this incident to come forward and assist with the investigation. Members of the public can contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS mobile application anonymously.
