Ekurhuleni Deputy Police Chief Suspended Amid Misconduct Allegations
Johannesburg – The City of Ekurhuleni has suspended its Deputy Chief of Police, Julius Mkhwanazi, pending formal disciplinary proceedings. The suspension follows recommendations stemming from an internal audit investigation into allegations of misconduct.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the City of Ekurhuleni confirmed the suspension, emphasising that it is "an administrative measure intended to safeguard the integrity of the disciplinary process and should not be construed as a finding of guilt." The City added that formal disciplinary proceedings will now commence, adhering to applicable labour laws and municipal regulations.
Mkhwanazi's suspension comes in the wake of serious allegations levelled against him at the Madlanga Commission. He stands accused of attempting to cover up the torture and murder of an unidentified man in April 2022.
Furthermore, witnesses have implicated Mkhwanazi in a scandal involving tenderpreneur Vusimusi "Cat" Matlala. Matlala allegedly managed to have his vehicles registered as EMPD (Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department) vehicles and fitted with blue lights.
