Delft – Commuters arriving at the Voorbrug taxi rank in Delft in the early hours of Wednesday morning were met with a gruesome discovery: the body of an unidentified man hanging at the rank. The incident has sparked speculation of foul play amongst Delft residents.
The body, believed to be that of a black male in his thirties, was discovered shortly after 4am by a taxi driver arriving for work. The scene has left many deeply disturbed.
"It was very traumatic to witness something like this so early in the day,” one commuter told local media.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the man's death.
He said: “Delft police registered an inquest for investigation after the body of a male believed to be in his thirties was found at the taxi rank in Voorbrug, Delft, at about 04:20. The circumstances surrounding his death are under investigation.”
Twigg added that a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
The discovery has fuelled intense speculation amongst Delft residents, with many taking to social media to express their concerns that the man may have been murdered and his body staged to look like a suicide.
One Facebook post read that Delft residents speculated whether the man was murdered or possibly hung by someone else.
One commuter, who witnessed the scene shortly after the discovery, wrote: “When I arrived there, his body was still hanging. There was only one police van at the time. It was still very dark and I couldn't really see what was going on.”
Adding to the mystery, a member of the Delft Neighbourhood Watch claimed that the victim is from Corona Village in Delft and is believed to have been a security officer. However, he was found without any belongings or a bag.
Attempts to reach out to the Delft Community Police Forum for comment surrounding this incident were ignored.
Sergeant Twigg has appealed to the public for assistance in the investigation. "Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111," he said.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward to help shed light on the circumstances surrounding this tragic death.
