Ekurhuleni – A shocking collision involving over 20 vehicles brought the N12 Westbound near Edenvale Road to a standstill on Tuesday afternoon, leaving multiple motorists injured and causing significant traffic disruptions.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) confirmed that two drivers sustained serious injuries in the pile-up and were immediately transported to separate hospitals for urgent medical attention. In addition, eight other motorists suffered minor injuries as a result of the crash.

While rescue operations continue, authorities are still working to determine the exact cause of the accident. An investigation is underway to ascertain the events that led to the multi-vehicle collision, and officials have yet to confirm whether there were any fatalities.

EMPD spokesperson Ann Makgatho said the accident resulted in significant traffic chaos and injuries. "Two drivers sustained serious injuries and were promptly transported to separate hospitals for emergency treatment. Eight additional motorists suffered minor injuries,” she confirmed.

The highway has been closed to allow emergency crews to clear the wreckage and manage the diesel spillage, ensuring the safety of other road users. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes, as significant delays are expected to persist while the scene is secured and investigated.

"A case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened at Bedfordview Saps. The N12 remains closed as cleanups and investigations are still ongoing,” Makgatho added. Officials have warned motorists to steer clear of the area and use alternate routes as cleanup operations continue.

This incident follows a horrific bus crash last month on the R21 near OR Tambo International Airport, where 14 people tragically lost their lives and 77 others were injured.

Ekurhuleni Mayor Doctor Xhakaza said a preliminary report into the horror bus crash revealed that “sudden braking” may have caused the accident. “The preliminary assessment suggests that a sudden brake led to the bus losing control. Further details are subject to verification,” he stated.

The City of Ekurhuleni has pledged to assist the families of those affected by the deadly bus crash, and officials are currently compiling a full report on the incident.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) spokesperson Simon Zwane said the bus driver was seriously injured and received treatment at Edenvale Hospital. “Investigators are in the process of identifying the other vehicle that was in the events that led to the crash," Zwane said.

“Video footage recorded by Sanral CCTV cameras is being analysed for inclusion in the final crash report to be included in the docket for the South African Police Services and the Director of Public Prosecutions,” Zwane added.

President Cyril Ramaphosa and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi offered their condolences to the families of the people who lost their lives in the deadly bus crash.
