The incident, which occurred just after 6am, involved an overloaded taxi carrying approximately 23 passengers and a single cab truck. The scene was described as one of "chaos and carnage" by emergency services personnel.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson detailed the aftermath of the crash: “Paramedics arrived on scene to find chaos and carnage after a taxi fully laden with about 23 people lost control and smashed into a barrier before rolling multiple times and ejecting most passengers.”

The force of the impact was such that most of the passengers were thrown from the vehicle during the multiple rollovers.

Emergency services immediately initiated a triage process, treating approximately 21 patients on the scene. The injuries sustained ranged from moderate to critical, necessitating transport to various Durban hospitals for further medical care.

"Paramedics from various ambulance services treated approximately 21 patients on the scene with injuries ranging from moderate to critical before they were transported to various Durban hospitals for the medical care they required," Jamieson confirmed.

Tragically, two male passengers, believed to be in their 30s and 40s, succumbed to their injuries at the scene.

"The two deceased were in their 30s and 40s and sustained major injuries. There was nothing paramedics could do for them and they were declared deceased at the scene,” Jamieson stated. The severity of their injuries left paramedics unable to save their lives.

The accident caused significant traffic disruption, with both the northbound and southbound lanes of the N2 affected. "The north and southbound lanes have been affected. The N2 is gridlocked as emergency workers are still busy. I advise motorists to avoid this area,” Jamieson warned. The resulting gridlock highlighted the scale of the incident and the extensive emergency response required.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by police, although it is alleged that the driver lost control of the vehicle. "It is alleged that the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to roll over multiple times, ejecting passengers," Jamieson explained.

The driver himself was entrapped in the wreckage and required extrication by emergency teams, including the eThekwini Fire Department. "Paramedics did a triage and unfortunately found that two people had sustained fatal injuries, one being the driver." Jamieson confirmed. The second fatality was also a male passenger, both in their 30s.

The severity of the injuries sustained by some passengers was particularly concerning.

"Two patients sustained critical injuries and were placed on manual ventilators on the scene by Advanced Life Support paramedics before they were rushed to a nearby hospital," Jamieson reported. A further six patients suffered serious injuries and received on-scene treatment before being transported to hospitals.

A driver and passenger were killed and several others injured following a crash in KZN on Friday night.

The roadway remained closed for an extended period to allow for clean-up operations. The impact of the accident extended beyond the immediate aftermath, disrupting traffic flow and requiring a significant effort to clear the scene. The police are investigating the exact cause of the crash to determine contributing factors.

This tragic incident comes amidst a busy festive season for emergency services in the Durban area. Jamieson noted that Christmas Day alone saw emergency teams responding to three separate crashes: a critical injury on the N2, a serious injury on the M19 near Otto Volek, and a rollover near Umgeni Road. "We urge all motorists to please be cautious on the roads. Slow down and reach your destination alive," he pleaded.
