Barclays Bank Africa relaunches as Absa with a new logo, introduces WhatsApp banking – a first for SA


It was revealed today that Absa clients will now be allowed to do their banking via WhatsApp.

Banking via WhatsApp will be a first for South Africa. The company launched their new brand strategy today and said that using WhatsApp will be a major part of their new tech innovative platform.

This is not WhatsApp's first foray into banking. The tech company made a major push into banking and transactional services in May this year, with their new service called WhatsApp Pay services. The service was introduced in India only.

Private lender Kotak Mahindra Bank introduced the service on a trial basis but Absa is the first bank to launch the service fully anywhere in the world.

Absa said that the new service will be part of its "social media banking" strategy and that customers can now conduct "instant transactions" using Absa's ChatBanking service.

The new service will be available on WhatsApp but also on Facebook Messenger and Twitter.

Absa clients will be able to check their balance, pay beneficiaries and buy airtime, data and electricity easily.

How do you use WhatApp banking?

STEP 1: Add Absa (086 000 8600) as a contact on your device – like a contact.
STEP 2: Open WhatsApp and find the new contact and just say hi.

A whole new world

Barclays Africa, today also offically changed its name back to Absa, in a rebranding aimed at underlining its South African roots as Britain’s Barclays gradually retreats from Africa.

The name change comes almost a year after Barclays sold most of its controlling stake in Absa, South Africa’s third-largest lender, ending more than a century of the British bank’s involvement in Africa to focus on its home market and the United States.
