DURBAN – Approximately 18 children have been injured after the taxi they were travelling in overturned on the N3 near Durban this morning. The accident occurred on the first day of the new school term, just before 7am on Monday, on the N3 before the Mariannhill toll plaza.
ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson reported that paramedics arrived at the scene to find a single taxi, transporting school children, had lost control and overturned, coming to rest on its roof.
"ALS Paramedics Medical Services arrived at the scene after a single taxi transporting school children lost control and overturned, coming to rest on its roof," he said.
Due to the number of casualties, paramedics established a triage system and requested additional ambulances and advanced life support paramedics to assist with treating the injured children.
Jamieson confirmed that the children sustained injuries ranging from moderate to severe. "About 18 children sustained injuries ranging from moderate to severe and were stabilised before being transported to Durban hospitals," he said.
The events leading up to the accident are currently under investigation by police. Authorities will be working to determine the cause of the crash and whether any factors, such as road conditions or driver error, contributed to the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
