Jabulani Tsambo, better known as Hip Hop Pantsula, or HHP in short has died following a fourth suicide attempt, Celeb Gossip South Africa has learnt.
His family officially confirmed the singer's death through a media statement on Wednesday evening and asked for privacy as they struggle to come to terms with it. The cause of the rapper’s death is said to be suicide.
“It is with heavy hearts that we confirm that Jabulani Tsambo, known to his fans as Hip Hop Pantsula passed away today, Wednesday, 24 October 2018. At the time of his passing he was 38 years -old. He is survived by his wife, his parents, two sisters, his son and nephew.
“The Tsambos request privacy during this time of mourning. Once all arrangements have been made, the family will make further communication,” read the statement.
According to several reports, HHP’s home in Randpark Ridge, Johannesburg was a scene of sadness as friends and family gathered to pay their respects.
Speculation surrounding the Motswako rapper’s death has been rife ever since it emerged as he has previously opened up about suffering from depression.
During an interview with Gareth Cliff on CliffCentral in 2016, HHP spoke out about attempting suicide three times in 2015.
“This voice came to me and said ‘Dude‚ if you really want to die‚ you need to live. If you really want to die‚ you need to do that shit that you’ve always wanted to do and you’ve always been scared of doing and one of those is speaking my mind’,” he said at the time.
Yesterday it was also reported that a close friend confirmed that HHP’s cause of death is suspected to be suicide.
“It was the depression that took him,” the friend said.
HHP told Gareth Cliff on his morning show that last year he tried to commit suicide 3 times. Whilst talking about his new music, rumored wedding to reality star Lerato Sengadi and music, the rapper revealed the sad news.
Asked why he seems liberated in recent times in his music, HHP said at the time it was because he wasn't getting gigs anymore and the music had become different. “I tried to commit suicide three times last year because radio has started to play trap music only," he told Cliff.
“I’m like I can not do trap music because that is not what black excellence is about. I was like I’m not getting gigs now, I’m old school right?, I have to get with the program or fizzle out.”
HHP also revealed how he tried to take his own life. He told Gareth the first time he joined the suicide assist website but was it costing him a lot of money. He said he also tried carbon monoxide poisoning.
The third time he tried to kill himself using helium but when it didn’t work a voice came to him telling him that if he really wanted to die, then he had to live.
“If you really wanna die you should do that thing that you’ve always been scared to do. One of it has always been speaking my mind”, he said.
HHP said there was a lot of hate, there was lack of love and quick to start a war, “I wanna be the guy who talks about love”, that’s when everything changed for him.
Now it seems the troubled rapper has finally succeeded in killing himself on the fourth attempt.
