One Robber Dead After Businessman Fights Back in Dramatic Midnight Shootout

It was a scene straight out of an action movie, but for a prominent business family in Crawford, Lansdowne, it was a terrifying reality that unfolded on their own doorstep on Wednesday night. At approximately 9.15pm, the silence of Rokeby Road was shattered when a group of armed suspects forced their way into the residence, initiating a violent home invasion that would ultimately end in gunfire, a dead suspect, and a hospitalised criminal now under police guard.

This was not a random act of misfortune. Residents and local authorities believe the family was specifically targeted, marking a chilling escalation in the type of brazen criminality that has left many in the area on edge. While Lansdowne and surrounding suburbs have grappled with varying levels of property-related crime, the audacity of this attack—occurring in the heart of a residential area—highlights the persistent threat that many families face within their own sanctuaries.

According to reports, the victims were at home when unknown suspects entered the house armed with firearms and demanded cash. The terrifying ordeal saw the family members bound, leaving them helpless while the perpetrators rifled through their home. However, the plan went horribly wrong for the invaders when the homeowner, who had been in the shower when the commotion began, became aware of the intrusion.

In a split-second decision that likely saved his family’s lives, the father managed to access his firearm. He emerged from the bathroom to confront the criminals, leading to an exchange of gunfire. The outcome was swift and final for one of the attackers, who was fatally wounded inside the house. A second suspect, also injured in the confrontation, managed to flee the property but was later discovered and arrested at a nearby Astron garage, having collapsed from his wounds. He is currently being held in hospital under strict police guard.

Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that Lansdowne police have registered a case of house robbery for further investigation. Twigg sny die stuk so: "According to reports, the victims were at home when unknown suspects entered the house armed with firearms and demanded cash.”

"The victims were tied up. We can confirm that shots were fired and one suspect was fatally wounded.

"A second suspect who was also wounded was later arrested and is in hospital under police guard."

Twigg added that "The circumstances surrounding the incident is subject to an investigation by the South African Police Service."

The impact of such an event on the family and the surrounding community cannot be understated. Rashard Davids, Chairperson of the Civic Association of Rondebosch East (CARE) and Vice Chair of the Neighbourhood Watch, emphasised the gravity of the situation, confirming that this was no coincidence.

He wysed: "I can confirm that it is a business family. It was a targeted robbery by the suspects."

Davids provided further insight into the harrowing moments leading up to the gunfight. He said: "The family was tied up and the perpetrators demanded some money. That's when the father noticed what was going on and reached for his gun."

Reflecting on the sheer speed at which the situation devolved, Davids added: "The husband or the father was in the shower when he heard this commotion.

"He then reached for his gun, shot one who died in the house and another one that ran away and collapsed at the Astron garage."

While investigations are ongoing, there is hope that the perpetrators will face justice, with Davids indicating that investigators are likely to have a strong lead on the vehicle used by the suspects to flee the scene. As the community digests the events of Wednesday night, the focus remains on the safety of the family involved.

"As a Civic Association, we condemn this in the strongest possible terms, and we sympathise with the family."

"We are just grateful none of them were hurt."

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the volatile nature of crime in our suburbs, where security measures and vigilance remain critical. While the family escaped physical harm, the trauma of such an event leaves lasting scars. The police are urging anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity or has information regarding the suspects' getaway vehicle to step forward.
