Man shot dead in front of shoppers at Avonwood Square Mall

A man was shot dead in front of patrons and workers at Avonwood Square Mall in Elsies River on Friday morning, leaving shoppers shaken and police searching for the gunman.

The shooting happened in the mall’s parking area along Balvenie Avenue on 2 October 2026. A graphic video of the incident later circulated on social media, showing the man lying partly outside a grey Renault Kwid, with his feet still inside the vehicle.

Blood was visible across the back of his white T-shirt while the driver’s door stood wide open.

The scene quickly became the main topic of conversation among workers and customers. People gathered near the area as police cordoned it off and worked to secure evidence.

One eyewitness said he initially thought a motor vehicle accident had taken place. The situation changed within seconds when gunshots rang out.

The witness said three people had been inside the Renault when it crashed into another vehicle. Two people then jumped out and ran away, while the driver remained inside.

According to the eyewitness, the driver was trying to get out when another man came running around the corner with a gun.

“I was standing right there where the shooting happened.

“I saw three people inside the car; they crashed into another car. Two people jumped out and ran away.

“The driver remained inside the car, and when he started getting out of the car, there was another guy who came running around the corner with a gun.

“He shot the driver in the back and fired a few shots at the two running away. I cannot say where the shooter came from. Police were on the scene for about three hours.

“Everything happened so quickly; thankfully I wasn't hit or anyone else by a stray bullet. I just wanted to get away, but this is a hotspot for crime. It is not the first time they shoot here.”

The aftermath of the apparent crash was still visible after the shooting. A second vehicle had a completely dislodged bumper, while pieces of debris were scattered across the parking area.

The damage suggested that the collision happened immediately before the gunfire, although detectives will have to establish the exact sequence of events.

One worker said the deceased apparently lived in Clarke Estate in Elsies River. The worker also alleged that the shooting could be gang-related, although police have not confirmed a motive or linked the killing to gang activity.

Another customer said she had no idea a shooting had taken place before arriving at the mall.

“I was on my way to Shoprite and not aware of the shooting until I got to the mall and saw the body lying there already and police were on the scene.

“I was so shocked because apparently it is a young man who was killed from Clarke Estate.”

Community members and children gathered near the scene while police officers worked to preserve evidence and keep people away from the body and vehicles.

The presence of children and shoppers near the cordoned-off area highlighted how the shooting happened in a public place during the morning, when the mall was being used by workers, customers and families.

Despite the violent incident, the mall eventually returned to its normal rhythm after the crime scene was cleared. Patrons continued with their shopping and workers returned to their duties, although the shooting remained the main subject of discussion.

Provincial police spokesperson Thembakazi Mpendukana confirmed that a murder investigation had been opened at Elsies River police station.

Mpendukana said detectives were working to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and identify the person responsible.

“Elsies River detectives are investigating a murder case following a shooting incident that took the life of an adult male at Balvenie Avenue, Elsies River, on the morning of Friday, 2 October 2026.

“No arrest has been made yet and the investigation continues.”

The victim’s identity has not been released in the police statement.

Detectives are expected to examine the Renault Kwid, the damaged vehicle, the position of the body and any bullet casings or other evidence recovered from the parking area.

The graphic video circulating online may also form part of the investigation, although police will need to verify when and where it was recorded before relying on it as evidence.

Investigators are expected to speak to the eyewitnesses who were present when the shooting happened. Their accounts could help police determine whether the gunman was following the occupants, whether the attack was planned and where he went after firing the shots.

The two people who ran from the Renault may also be important witnesses. Police will need to establish their identities and determine whether they were victims, suspects or people fleeing from the attacker.

The eyewitness’s account that shots were also fired in the direction of the fleeing pair will be examined as part of the investigation. Detectives will have to establish whether anyone else was wounded and how many shots were fired.

The apparent crash may have been part of the events leading up to the shooting, but police have not said whether the collision was accidental or happened during a chase.

The motive remains unknown. At this stage, police have not confirmed whether the shooting was linked to a robbery, a gang dispute, a targeted attack or another criminal matter.

Community concerns about crime in the area are likely to intensify after the shooting. The eyewitness described the location as a crime hotspot and said it was not the first time gunfire had been heard there.

However, the allegation of gang involvement remains unconfirmed and should not be treated as established fact until investigators provide evidence or make an official finding.

The murder investigation will now focus on identifying the deceased, tracing the shooter and establishing why the man was attacked in the mall parking area.

Police may appeal to motorists and shoppers who were in the area on Friday morning to provide information, dashcam footage or cellphone recordings that could assist the case.

Anyone who saw the grey Renault Kwid before or after the shooting, or who noticed a person fleeing the area, may have information that could help detectives.

No arrests have been made, and the suspect remains at large.

The case also raises fresh questions about security in public shopping areas, where workers and customers can find themselves caught in violent incidents while going about their daily routines.

For now, the mall has returned to business, but the image of a man lying beside a Renault with blood on his shirt remains etched in the memories of the people who witnessed the attack.

Elsies River detectives continue to investigate the murder, while the victim’s family waits for answers about who killed him and why.
