“This Is Truly My Second Chance”: L’vovo Derrango Breaks Silence on Stroke That Nearly Took His Life

Kwaito star L’vovo Derrango has spoken publicly for the first time about the stroke that nearly claimed his life, revealing how the sudden medical emergency left him fighting for survival, robbed him of his independence and forced him to rebuild his life from the ground up.

The award-winning musician, born Thokozani Ndlovu, said the ordeal began without warning while he was doing what he loves most — performing on stage. In an instant, his thriving music career came to a standstill.

“I never imagined my life would change so suddenly,” Ndlovu said.

The performer recalled how the stroke struck mid-performance, leaving him vulnerable and uncertain about his future. What followed was a desperate rush to hospital and weeks spent in intensive care.

“There were days when I questioned whether I would ever stand on a stage again. But God gave me another chance, and I chose to fight every single day. If my story can inspire even one person not to give up, then every struggle has been worth it.”

Weeks in ICU and a Long Road Back

After collapsing, Ndlovu was admitted to hospital, where he remained in the intensive care unit (ICU) for weeks. Surviving that critical period, he says, was only the beginning of a far more demanding journey.

Leaving hospital did not mean life returned to normal. Instead, he faced the painful reality of rehabilitation, physical limitations and the emotional toll of starting over.

The stroke affected more than his mobility. It also robbed him of his voice — the very tool that built his career.

“I was unable to speak properly or project my voice, so making music simply wasn’t an option,” he said.

For an artist whose identity is deeply tied to performance and recording, the inability to speak clearly was devastating. Studio sessions were out of the question, and live performances became a distant dream.

Financial Strain and Personal Loss

With no bookings and no income, the financial impact quickly followed. The sudden halt to his career placed immense pressure on him, forcing difficult lifestyle changes.

“I suffered financially because I wasn’t working or receiving any bookings. I had to move back home. I was scared to go outside and be seen by people,” he said.

The loss of independence weighed heavily on him. Accustomed to commanding stages and travelling for performances, Ndlovu found himself confined to recovery and reliant on others for support.

“My real friends would come, cook for me, and take care of me. I received words of support. I also lost many people.”

His words reflect a sobering reality often experienced during times of crisis — that adversity can both strengthen genuine relationships and expose superficial ones.

Retreating From the Public Eye

Beyond the physical and financial challenges, the kwaito star grappled with how he was perceived.

He admitted that he withdrew from social life and avoided public appearances, unwilling to be reduced to a subject of sympathy.

“I stopped socialising and refused to be seen in public because I didn’t want people to feel sorry for me,” he said.

“Everywhere I went, my health became the topic of discussion. I understood that people cared, but I could also see the pity in their eyes. I never wanted to be defined by sympathy because I was fighting to recover. I wanted people to see me when I was ready, not when I was at my weakest.”

For a public figure, stepping away from the spotlight is never easy. But Ndlovu says the time away allowed him to focus entirely on healing — physically, mentally and spiritually.

“There were moments when everything felt uncertain, but I refused to give up. Healing and recovery begin in the mind. Once you decide that you’re going to fight, your body follows.”

A Changed Man With a Renewed Purpose

Now firmly on the road to recovery, L’vovo describes his survival as nothing short of miraculous.

“I am one of the few people who were blessed enough to wake up from the ICU and be able to tell my story,” he said.

“This is truly my second chance at life. I live differently now. I eat well, I rest, I take care of myself and I appreciate every day that God gives me. I am finally living the way I should have before I fell ill.”

The experience has reshaped his outlook, teaching him the importance of balance, self-care and gratitude. He says he no longer takes simple things for granted — from being able to speak clearly to standing upright on his own.

As he prepares for a gradual return to the spotlight, Ndlovu hopes his journey will resonate beyond the music industry. He wants stroke survivors, and anyone facing life-altering challenges, to know that recovery is possible.

His story is not only about a celebrated musician confronting mortality, but also about resilience — about choosing to fight when everything feels uncertain.

For L’vovo Derrango, the stage may have gone silent for a time. But today, his voice carries a different kind of power — one shaped by survival, faith and the determination to begin again.
