The acclaimed actor and director reveals his personal battle against alleged financial mismanagement, sparking a crucial conversation about fair compensation in the South African entertainment industry.

Johannesburg, South Africa – The South African entertainment landscape has been rocked by a burgeoning scandal surrounding the SABC2 telenovela "Pimville," as acclaimed actor, producer, and director Kagiso Modupe has finally broken his silence. In a candid and emotional address, Modupe has shed light on the tumultuous production, which has seen cast, crew, and suppliers allegedly go unpaid for their dedicated work. His revelations have not only deepened the controversy but have also ignited a vital discussion about accountability and ethical practices within the local film and television sector.

The drama began unfolding over the past week, with reports indicating that filming for "Pimville" had ground to a halt due to persistent non-payment issues. The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), the commissioning broadcaster, quickly moved to distance itself from the financial woes, asserting that it had fulfilled all its contractual obligations to Bakwena Productions, the company responsible for the show. The SABC further alleged that Bakwena Productions was in clear breach of its contract, effectively shifting the blame to the production house.

However, Modupe’s recent statement offers a nuanced perspective, painting a picture of an artist caught in the crossfire of corporate complexities. Addressing the mounting backlash and what he described as "a lot of negative news" circulating about him, Modupe meticulously detailed his involvement with "Pimville." He explained that the project initially began as a collaborative effort between Bakwena Productions Media House and creator Brenda Mukwevho, whose original concept formed the foundation of the telenovela. Once the initial contracts were finalised, Modupe’s role evolved from an executive producer to primarily serving as the head director.

Crucially, Modupe emphatically stated that he was never entrusted with the financial management of the production. "Since the inception of the show, I have never been involved or had it been my responsibilities to take care of any financial functionings of the show," he declared, underscoring his focus on the creative and directorial aspects. His primary objective, he maintained, was to deliver a high-quality production that would resonate with South African viewers, a goal that now feels tragically overshadowed by the financial turmoil.

As concerns about unpaid actors and suppliers began to surface during the production phase, Modupe revealed that he raised these critical issues internally with his partners. However, his attempts to address the growing problem were allegedly met with resistance. "When things started going wrong financially, actors were not paid, suppliers were not paid," he shared, adding that he was explicitly told to "stay in my lane." This directive, he implied, prevented him from intervening more directly in the financial operations, despite his growing unease about the welfare of his colleagues.

Undeterred by the internal pushback, Modupe escalated the matter to the SABC and other relevant stakeholders as the situation deteriorated. He personally advocated for the appointment of a supervising producer, hoping that an additional layer of oversight would help stabilise the production and ensure timely payments. Despite these efforts, the financial crisis deepened, leaving many involved with the project in a precarious position.

Modupe also used his platform to address the personal toll the scandal has taken on him. He disclosed that, despite his significant contributions as head director, he too has not received payment for his work on "Pimville." This revelation adds another layer of complexity to the narrative, demonstrating that the financial mismanagement has impacted individuals at various levels of the production. "And so the narrative out there is that I am responsible for it, of which I am not. And that’s what I really want to clear," he asserted, seeking to correct public perception and absolve himself of direct culpability for the financial fallout.

In a move that signals a new chapter, Modupe announced his decision to distance himself from Bakwena Media Group over the past year. He is now in the process of rebranding Bakwena Productions into Modupe Studios, an initiative he envisions as a beacon for healthier, more equitable practices within the industry. "And that’s why I, for the past year, have detached from Bakwena Media Group and rebranding Bakwena Productions to Modupe Studios," he explained. This new venture, he hopes, will prioritise innovation while ensuring that actors, producers, and crew members are fairly and promptly compensated for their invaluable contributions.

Concluding his heartfelt statement, Modupe extended his gratitude to industry colleagues, producers, actors, and crew members who have offered their support, both publicly and privately, during this challenging period. "I really appreciate that. That makes me feel that you know who I am and what I stand for," he remarked, highlighting the importance of solidarity in times of crisis. The "Pimville" scandal serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities within the entertainment industry and the urgent need for greater transparency and accountability to protect the livelihoods of creative professionals.
