Somizi Mhlongo: From Grade 9 Dropout to Fashion Certificate Graduate

Johannesburg – Flamboyant media personality Somizi Mhlongo is proving that it's never too late to chase your dreams, after successfully completing a fashion design certificate at the Villioti Fashion Institute. Mhlongo, known for his vibrant personality and successful career in entertainment, is demonstrating that age is no barrier to ambition.

In 2023, Sunday World reported on Mhlongo's decision to return to education and enrol in a fashion design programme – a bold move for someone who left school in Standard 7 (Grade 9) to pursue his passion for the entertainment industry.

Two years on, Mhlongo has shared an encouraging update on his academic journey, showcasing his unwavering commitment to personal growth.

Speaking to Sunday World, Mhlongo expressed his pride in his achievement. "I am super proud of myself for constantly proving how focused and driven I am," he said. "Whenever I start something, I make sure I finish it; that’s just who I am. I’m definitely going back next year for a higher certificate and eventually a degree before I turn 60."

Reflecting on his educational journey, Mhlongo shared how deeply rewarding this chapter has been, both personally and creatively. "I have achieved so much in entertainment, but this, investing in my education, hits differently," he said. "It is a reminder to myself and to everyone watching that it is never too late to level up, no matter where you are in life."

The former Idols SA judge stated in 2023 that his love of fashion and his expanding company, Somphire Kids, were the driving forces behind his decision to go back to school. He initially signed up for a six-month part-time course, with his sights firmly set on eventually earning a fashion design degree.

Mhlongo, who is renowned for his extravagant style and unmatched work ethic, believes that education has given him a renewed sense of purpose. "With this one [fashion course], I was ready. I am content with who I am and where I am in life. It is always about timing at the end of the day," he explained.

Mhlongo's story serves as an inspiration to those who may feel it's too late to pursue their passions or invest in their education. His determination and commitment demonstrate that with focus and drive, anything is possible, regardless of age or past experiences. He is a true example of lifelong learning and personal growth.
