Durban – Gqom sensation Babes Wodumo is set to make a triumphant return to the music scene with her upcoming album, "Mabheshingo," dedicated to her late husband and collaborator, Mandla "Mampintsha" Maphumulo. The album marks a significant new chapter for the 31-year-old musician from Lamontville, west of Durban, following the loss of her husband in December 2022.
Mampintsha, also known as Shimora, was a popular gqom and kwaito star and a member of the multi-award-winning trio Big Nuz. He passed away after suffering a stroke, leaving behind a significant void in the South African music industry and in the life of his wife, Babes Wodumo.
Babes and Mampintsha were a well-known celebrity couple, frequently collaborating on songs under Mampintsha’s record label, Westink. Their relationship, both personal and professional, captivated fans across Mzansi. The couple wed in 2020.
Now, Babes Wodumo, whose real name is Bongekile Simelane Maphumulo, is honouring her husband's legacy with her first album release since his passing. "Mabheshingo," a 10-track project, is scheduled to drop on Friday, 17 October. As a preview for her fans, she released three singles on Friday, 3 October, offering a taste of what's to come.
The "Wololo" hitmaker remains dedicated to her late husband and grateful to Mzansi for the support she has received during these tough times. In a statement, Babes Wodumo shared her sentiments about the new album:
“I took time to reflect on life’s events that happened in my life. I appreciate the love I have been getting from people who appreciate my talent and music. They also showed me love during the difficult times of losing my husband, Mampintsha. The new work is dedicated to him, the people of South Africa and the world. Thank you for the love and the support.”
In a touching tribute, Babes Wodumo has included two of Mampintsha’s unreleased songs on "Mabheshingo," ensuring his musical voice continues to be heard.
Babes Wodumo’s last studio album, "Idandokazi," was released in 2020 when Mampintsha was still alive. "Mabheshingo" represents a new beginning for the artist, showcasing her resilience and determination to continue her musical journey while honouring the memory of her beloved husband.
Her new album will be released by her record label Wena Wodumo, in partnership with Gallo Records. The partnership signifies a new chapter in her career, providing her with a platform to reach a wider audience and further solidify her position as a leading figure in the gqom music scene.
