### Khune Swiftly Averts Repossession of Luxury Mercedes-Benz
In a dramatic turn of events, former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has acted swiftly to prevent his luxury vehicle from being repossessed. The action comes amid allegations that he could no longer afford the steep monthly installments on the high-performance car.
The ordeal began with a financial dispute with Mercedes-Benz, the company that financed his purchase of an AMG C43 4Matic. Since July, a breach of financial contract has been hanging over Khune's head after the company sent him a letter of demand. The letter alleged that his account was a staggering R99,000 in arrears.
A Breach of Contract and Legal Notice
A copy of the letter, which City Press has seen, confirms the serious nature of the situation. It explicitly states that Khune was given an opportunity to refer the alleged breach to a debt counsellor but failed to do so. This lack of action, according to the document, prompted the creditor to seek the recovery of the vehicle, citing financial prejudice.
According to the legal notice, the vehicle recovery was a key part of the initial agreement if Khune did not meet his financial obligations. The document reads, "The asset purchased with a loan belongs to Mercedes-Benz until Khune pays all financial obligations. Interest will be charged as set out in the agreement on the outstanding balance."
The notice further reveals that Khune agreed to the purchase in July 2022, with the car's price stipulated as R877,117. "He did not comply with referring the matter for debt review to a counsellor, in that he did not exercise his rights and has not surrendered the vehicle as required by the National Credit Act," the document stated. Ultimately, the notice indicates that the vehicle would be sold to allow the creditor to recover the purchase price. The letter also highlighted that the outstanding balance on Khune's account was R316,885 when it was first sent via email.
Khune’s Lawyer Confirms Swift Payment
Khune, who was served with the letter of demand on 25 July, referred City Press to his lawyer, Themba Mkhonto. "Please contact my lawyer and speak to him about this," he said.
Mkhonto subsequently confirmed that the outstanding amount had been paid to Mercedes-Benz on Friday, effectively ending the dispute. "I am very much aware of the payment that Mercedes-Benz is referring to, but it has now become moot, as it has been sorted out today [Friday]," Mkhonto stated. This swift payment has seemingly resolved the immediate crisis, preventing the repossession of the luxury vehicle.
A Difficult Delivery
A source from the office of the sheriffs, tasked with delivering the legal notice, shared details of the difficulty they faced in serving the papers to Khune. The source said they visited Khune’s home in Roodepoort multiple times but could not gain access to the property. "We went to the house to deliver the notice, but we were unable to find anyone to receive the letter at the entrance. I think I visited the house about five times over the course of a month," said the source.
The former Kaizer Chiefs captain played his entire career at the club, joining the Glamour Boys in 2004 and only hanging up his boots last year. Khune was a prominent figure in South African football and was part of the national team that participated in the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
