Johannesburg – Elias Lehlogonolo Mabitsela, the estranged husband of The Mommy Club reality star Ratile Mabitsela, has died. The businessman, who appeared alongside his wife in the first and second seasons of the Showmax show, was 44 years old.
The Mabitsela family confirmed the news in a statement released on Wednesday, 12 February. "It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved brother and son, Elias Lehlogonolo Mothapo Mabitsela," the statement read. "We are still coming to terms with this devastating loss and kindly request that our family be given the space and privacy we need during this incredibly difficult time."
The family also expressed their gratitude for the support they have received. "We appreciate the love and support we have received so far and ask that you continue to respect our family's privacy as we grieve, and we further request that you keep us in your prayers. We will provide further updates in due course. Thank you for your understanding and condolences," they said in the statement, signed "Ba Ga Mabitsela".
While the family has not yet announced the cause of death, popular blogger Maphephandaba has reported that Mabitsela took his own life. The blog claims Mabitsela allegedly committed suicide, a rumour that his family has not yet confirmed.
The couple shared three children together, in addition to two more from Lehlogonolo’s previous relationship.
Elias and Ratile Mabitsela's marriage had been the subject of much speculation in recent times. In 2024, rumours of their impending divorce began to circulate, although the couple initially denied these claims.
Entertainment commentator Mbuyiselo Vilakazi recently reported on TikTok that the couple was going through a divorce. According to Vilakazi, the pair had been separated for some time, and their divorce was expected to be finalised soon. Vilakazi reported that both parties had moved on and were working towards an amicable agreement without any drama.
However, the relationship was reportedly marred by allegations of infidelity and domestic violence. Sunday World reported in 2024 that the businessman had filed for divorce, citing his frustration with Ratile due to accusations of infidelity and abuse on her part.
The passing of Elias Lehlogonolo Mabitsela comes at a difficult time for the family, and they have requested privacy as they grieve. Further updates are expected to be released in due course.
