Musa Khawula, the self-proclaimed “Pope of Pop Culture,” is finally facing the consequences of his controversial actions. The notorious celebrity blogger, known for his defamatory social media posts and brazen online persona, is currently behind bars and battling multiple legal charges, including murder, attempted murder, and violations of the Cybercrimes Act.

A Dramatic Court Appearance

On Wednesday, 29 January, Khawula’s legal team abandoned his bail bid in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court. The charges against him include crimen injuria, contempt of court, and contravening the Cybercrimes Act. These stem from his refusal to remove defamatory posts on X (formerly Twitter) about former Miss South Africa Tamaryn Green and her husband, businessman Ze Nxumalo.

In the posts, Khawula alleged that Ze had been unfaithful to his pregnant wife. Despite being ordered to apologise, Khawula’s response was cryptic and insufficient, leading to a warrant for his arrest. He was eventually apprehended at a tavern in Dundee, KwaZulu-Natal.

Magistrate Liesel Davis postponed the matter to 18 February for further investigation, and Khawula will remain in custody at Johannesburg Prison, colloquially known as Sun City, until his next court appearance.

A History of Controversy

Khawula’s legal troubles extend far beyond defamation. He is also facing charges of attempted murder related to a 2021 incident where he allegedly knocked over a man with his car and fled the scene. Gauteng National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana confirmed that Khawula will be charged with attempted murder, reckless driving, and failing to render assistance or report the accident.

In addition, Khawula is under investigation for the alleged murder of Wandile Khambule. According to Khambule’s girlfriend, Khawula stabbed the man to death after his romantic advances were rejected. Khawula, however, claims he acted in self-defence.

The Rise of the “Pope of Pop Culture”

Musa Khawula first gained notoriety as a celebrity blogger on X, where his unfounded claims about high-profile individuals quickly earned him a reputation as a provocateur. Over time, he expanded his reach, launching a YouTube channel and even securing an entertainment slot on Ukhozi FM.

Despite his online fame, Khawula remains an enigma. Here’s what we know about him:

  • Born in 1992, Khawula is currently 33 years old.
  • According to his LinkedIn profile, he is a qualified radiographer who studied at the University of Johannesburg in 2010.
  • Old Facebook posts suggest he was once an aspiring musician.
  • In 2020 and 2021, Khawula created dozens of accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and X in an attempt to gain mass followings.
  • Official documents reveal that he registered a production company in London in 2023, which was dissolved in January 2025.
  • Khawula has been threatened with defamation lawsuits multiple times for his unfounded claims about celebrities and politicians.
  • He was physically assaulted by celebrities Mihlali Ndamase and Moshe Ndiki over his tweets about them.
  • His X account has been banned several times for violating platform guidelines.

Other Legal Battles

Khawula’s legal woes don’t end there. In a separate incident, he accused Deputy Minister of Transport Mkhuleko Hlengwa of using his position to demand sexual favours from junior staff members. This post has added to his growing list of defamation charges.

The blogger’s reckless behaviour has also landed him in hot water offline. The attempted murder case, stemming from the 2021 hit-and-run incident, is set to be heard on 5 February.

A Pattern of Defiance

Throughout his career, Khawula has been unapologetic about his actions, often doubling down on his controversial statements. His courtroom demeanour reflects this defiance; during his recent appearance, he smiled, waved, and blew kisses to the media, seemingly unfazed by the gravity of his situation.

However, his bravado may soon catch up with him. With multiple serious charges pending, Khawula’s future looks increasingly uncertain.

Public Reaction

Khawula’s arrest has sparked mixed reactions online. While some applaud the move, seeing it as long-overdue accountability, others remain sceptical about whether justice will truly be served. His ability to evade consequences in the past has left many questioning whether this time will be any different.
