JOHANNESBURG – Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates star, Teko Modise, could be facing a hefty payout of over R1 million to his estranged wife, Koketso, if a proposed separation agreement is accepted. The couple, who have been living apart for over a year, are reportedly seeking an amicable end to their six-year marriage, but financial matters are proving to be a significant hurdle.
Koketso, an influencer, is said to be demanding a substantial settlement to resolve the financial aspects of their relationship, with a particular focus on settling outstanding debts. According to sources close to the couple, who wished to remain anonymous, Koketso also wants Modise to settle her overdraft credit of more than R50,000 with a commercial bank.
“She took the overdraft in her name, but when things turned sour, she realised that the credit agreement only benefited Teko. She and her lawyers feel strongly about him settling all the debts incurred during their relationship,” said the source.
The proposed settlement agreement, which City Press has reportedly seen, highlights Koketso's emphasis on the financial aspects of their relationship. Beyond the lump sum settlement, she is also seeking ongoing financial support to address the overdraft debt.
“Beyond the settlement amount of R1.2 million, she also wants Teko to pay R10 000 per month to resolve the [overdraft] debt, which is still in her name,” said the source. The source added that they have also chosen mediation, but the settlement agreement is seen as the ultimate recourse for both.
The breakdown of the marriage appears to stem from diverging lifestyles and a loss of affection. "They are living different lifestyles, which is making reconciliation difficult and they have declared that they have lost all the love and affection for each other."
Neither Modise nor Koketso were available for comment. Modise did not respond to questions sent to him for comment, while Koketso hung up the phone after being told what the call was about.
Modise, 42, enjoyed a celebrated career as a midfielder for Bafana Bafana, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Orlando Pirates. Since retiring from professional football in 2019, he has successfully transitioned into the worlds of fashion and broadcasting, becoming a seasoned broadcaster with SuperSport.
Modise has also cultivated lucrative partnerships with several prominent brands, including Samsonite SA, NJR Jewellers, Hollywoodbets, Puma, Nedbank, and Heineken, featuring in social media campaigns and TV commercials.
Modise was previously married to Felicia Mokoena between 2010 and 2013.
The news of Modise's marital troubles comes shortly after City Press reported on another celebrity divorce involving TV stars Hungani and Stephanie Ndlovu. The Ndlovus, who married in 2019, have been living separately since last October and are currently finalising their divorce at the Johannesburg High Court.
