Limpopo police sergeant allegedly kills man before taking his own life
A Limpopo police sergeant allegedly shot and killed a 32-year-old man before returning to his home, where he allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl and later fatally shot himself.
The sergeant was stationed at Mecklenburg South African Police Service in Limpopo. The incident occurred on Sunday and has led to murder and rape investigations, as well as an inquest into the officer’s death.
Limpopo provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said police were alerted to a shooting at Ga-Mashamothane at approximately 3.30pm.
“Members responded to the scene and found a 32-year-old man lying on the ground with gunshot wounds.”
The man was certified dead at the scene by Emergency Medical Services.
According to preliminary information, the shooting followed an encounter between the victim and the police officer while they were driving along a narrow road. Police said a dispute allegedly developed between the two men before the officer reportedly used his service firearm.
“A dispute reportedly ensued between the two men before the police officer allegedly shot the victim with his service firearm and left the scene.”
The police officer allegedly then drove to his residence in Ga-Masha, in the Sekhukhune District. A 14-year-old girl was allegedly travelling with him.
“The suspect allegedly thereafter drove to his residence with a 14-year-old girl who had been accompanying him.”
Police allege that the girl was raped at the officer’s residence. Because she is a minor, her identity has not been released.
Ledwaba said the alleged rape took place at the police officer’s home in Ga-Masha.
“It is further alleged that shortly afterwards, the suspect took his service firearm and fatally shot himself.”
The officer’s name has not been released by police. His death means that the allegations against him will not be tested through a criminal trial, but investigators must still establish the full circumstances surrounding the death of the 32-year-old man and the alleged assault of the teenager.
Cases opened and IPID notified
Police in Tubatse, in the Sekhukhune District, have opened cases of murder and rape. An inquest has also been opened in connection with the officer’s death.
Ledwaba said the Independent Police Investigative Directorate had been notified and would take over the further investigation. IPID investigates deaths involving members of the police and allegations of serious criminal conduct by police officers.
“Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are continuing,” he said.
The investigation is expected to examine the events on the narrow road, the use of the service firearm, the officer’s movements after the shooting and what happened at the Ga-Masha residence. Officers will also need to gather evidence and statements relating to the allegations involving the 14-year-old girl.
The police have not released a possible motive for the alleged roadside shooting. They have also not provided further details about the relationship between the officer and the teenager, beyond stating that she had been accompanying him.
Commissioner condemns incident
Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Jan Scheepers condemned the incident and said police officers had a particular responsibility because they were entrusted with firearms and were expected to protect the public and enforce the law.
“Police officers are entrusted with firearms and are expected to uphold and enforce the law. Where a member is alleged to have acted contrary to the law, the circumstances must be thoroughly investigated and the appropriate processes must follow.”
Scheepers expressed condolences to the family of the man who died and said support would be provided to the affected minor.
“We extend our condolences to the family of the deceased and assure the affected minor that she will receive the necessary support,” Scheepers added.
The teenager is expected to receive support as the investigation proceeds. Police have not released details about her medical condition, and no information identifying her has been made public.
The case has raised fresh concern about the responsibilities attached to police firearms and the need for allegations involving police officers to be investigated thoroughly. The murder, rape and inquest investigations remain ongoing, with IPID set to take over the further probe.
