A 29-year-old man who was allegedly kidnapped at gunpoint and held for ransom has been rescued during a police raid in Welkom, Free State — leading to the arrest of six suspects.
The dramatic rescue unfolded after a coordinated operation by multiple specialised police units tracked the alleged kidnappers to a house in Flamingo Park, where the victim was discovered tied up inside a garage.
Kidnapped at Gunpoint
According to Free State police spokesperson Sergeant Palesa Thabana, the victim was abducted from his home in Steyn 1 on Friday.
He was allegedly taken at gunpoint, after which his family began receiving calls demanding an undisclosed ransom for his safe return.
“It was discovered that the family of the victim received phone calls from the alleged suspects demanding an undisclosed ransom amount for the release of the victim,” Thabana said.
The matter was reported to Welkom police as well as the Free State Provincial Serious and Violent Crime: Murder and Robbery Unit based in Thabong.
Tactical Operation in Flamingo Park
Acting on gathered intelligence, a collaborative operation was launched involving the provincial murder and robbery unit, the Welkom K9 Unit and the Parkweg Tactical Response Team.
The teams traced the suspects to a property in Flamingo Park, where officers moved in.
“Police utilised their tactical expertise to approach and surround the identified house.
“When noticing the police, the suspects attempted to flee but were quickly accosted,” Thabana said.
All six suspects, aged between 28 and 46, were arrested at the scene.
Victim Found in State of Shock
Upon entering the property, police made a grim discovery inside the garage.
The kidnapped man was found with both hands tied behind his back.
“He was found in a severe state of shock. He sustained injuries to the back of the head and bruises on the hands and feet,” Thabana said.
Authorities believe the victim may have been assaulted while being held captive. He was rescued and is receiving medical care.
Firearms and Vehicles Seized
During the operation, police confiscated two handguns and ammunition believed to have been in the suspects’ possession.
Officers also seized three vehicles found at the property. Further investigations revealed that one of the vehicles had been reported stolen in Winburg.
The recovery of the suspected stolen vehicle has added another layer to the investigation, with police now probing whether the suspects may be linked to other crimes in the province.
Court Appearance Pending
The six men are expected to appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
They face charges of kidnapping, extortion, possession of unlicensed firearms and possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.
Police have not ruled out the possibility of additional charges as investigations continue.
The swift operation has been hailed as a breakthrough in tackling serious and violent crimes in the area, particularly cases involving ransom demands.
Authorities have urged residents to report suspicious activity and reassured communities that specialised units remain on high alert to respond to kidnapping and extortion cases.
For the 29-year-old victim and his family, the ordeal has come to an end — but the trauma of being abducted and held captive is likely to linger long after the arrests.
