Two married South African Police Service (SAPS) officers were found dead inside their home in Gqeberha in the early hours of Saturday, in an incident that unfolded while two minor children were on the property.
Police have opened both a murder docket and an inquest docket — a combination that aligns with initial allegations that the woman was shot by her husband before he turned the firearm on himself, in what is believed to have been a murder-suicide. Police have not released the names of the couple.
Police spokeswoman Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said the pair — a 34-year-old woman and her 44-year-old husband — were declared dead at the scene at their home in Buddeny Street, Parsonsvlei.
The incident was reported shortly after midnight. Janse van Rensburg said police responded at about 12.05am after a friend of the woman rushed to the residence and heard gunshots.
The account given by police begins with a phone call that raised alarm. According to Janse van Rensburg, the friend who arrived at the home told police she had received a call from the deceased woman alleging she was being assaulted by her husband.
"Upon arrival, members were met by a woman who reported that she had received a call from her friend, alleging that she was being assaulted by her husband," Janse van Rensburg said.
"The woman immediately went to the residence and, after allegedly hearing several gunshots, contacted the police."
When officers arrived and entered the premises, they found the bodies of the couple inside the home, Janse van Rensburg said. Both were serving SAPS members.
The presence of the couple’s children at the house during the incident has added a particularly distressing dimension to the case. Janse van Rensburg said the two minors were safely removed from the scene and placed in the care of family members.
While the circumstances are still being pieced together, police have been clear that the matter remains under investigation and that further details will not be released at this early stage.
"The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation. At this stage, no further details can be released as the investigation is in its early stages," Janse van Rensburg said.
Inquest dockets are typically opened when police are investigating an unnatural death where there is no immediate indication of a third party’s involvement. In this case, the opening of an inquest docket alongside a murder docket points to investigators treating the woman’s death as a homicide and the man’s death as an unnatural death requiring formal inquiry, consistent with the preliminary belief that he took his own life after killing his wife.
Police have not indicated whether a service firearm was involved, whether any previous domestic violence complaints had been filed, or whether additional evidence was found at the scene. Such details are commonly subject to forensic work, witness statements and follow-up enquiries before authorities are willing to speak publicly.
The incident also places a renewed spotlight on domestic violence risks within households, including those involving law enforcement personnel. While SAPS has repeatedly urged victims to report abuse, cases where officers themselves are involved can be especially complex, given access to firearms and the potential for fear or reluctance among victims to seek help.
In this case, the police statement suggests the first alert came not through an official complaint at a station, but through a private call to a friend — followed by the friend rushing to the house and then calling police after hearing gunshots.
For the two children, police said immediate steps were taken to remove them from the home and place them with family. Police have not said whether the children witnessed any of the events, but the timing — shortly after midnight — indicates they were present during the emergency response.
Investigators will now be expected to establish a detailed timeline of events, including the nature of the alleged assault report made by phone, the movements of the friend who arrived at the scene, and what occurred before the shooting. Police will also likely gather ballistic evidence, examine the firearm used, and take statements from neighbours and family members.
