Eastern Cape police have arrested a 28-year-old man who allegedly murdered his girlfriend, then buried her in a shallow grave, before exhuming the body and transporting it in a wheelbarrow to her family. The woman is believed to have been murdered at Rainy Location in Libode over the weekend.

Police spokesperson, Captain Welile Matyolo, said police were informed of the murder of the 29-year-old woman during the early hours of Saturday morning.

“It is alleged that the suspect murdered his girlfriend at an unknown location and buried her in a shallow grave in a secluded area. After the victim’s disappearance, the suspect, being the last person seen with her, was contacted by phone by concerned relatives, who demanded that he bring her back,” said Matyolo.

The suspect reportedly exhumed the body and transported it back to the family in a wheelbarrow before the police were informed.

Matyolo said police had obtained a confession from the suspect, in which he admitted to the murder and subsequent burial.

The suspect was scheduled to visit the crime scene on Monday to point out the shallow grave, before his appearance in the Libode Magistrate’s Court on a charge of murder.

OR Tambo district police commissioner, Major-General Norman Modishana, has urged communities to report missing persons to the police immediately if their whereabouts are unknown. “Immediate reporting of missing persons can save many innocent lives,” said Modishana.
