The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is hunting a ninth suspect after a deadly police operation in Bultfontein, Free State, left three civilians and a police constable dead.
Eight police officers were arrested on Saturday in connection with the September 2024 shooting, which followed what is believed to have been a domestic dispute that spiralled into a lethal confrontation.
The officers, who are being held in Welkom, face four counts of murder and are expected to appear in the Bultfontein Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping said the incident unfolded during a “high-intensity” operation in which officers forced their way into a house and opened fire.
“The police officers allegedly executed tactical entry into the house during which they discharged their firearms. Three civilians and one police officer died at the scene and 43 empty cartridge cases were collected from the crime scene," Suping stated.
IPID investigators found that all four people who died – three members of the same family and a police officer – succumbed to gunshot wounds.
IPID’s investigation further revealed that all the deceased—including three members of one family and the police officer—succumbed to gunshot injuries.
The scale of live ammunition recovered at the scene, alongside the number of fatalities, has intensified scrutiny of the conduct of the officers involved and the decision-making that led to the tactical entry.
While eight officers are already in custody, IPID has confirmed that it is still searching for a ninth suspect believed to have been involved in the operation.
The case raises serious questions about the use of force by police in domestic dispute interventions, and will likely focus attention on command decisions, adherence to tactical protocols and whether the threat level inside the house justified the volume of shots fired.
As the officers prepare for their first court appearance, IPID continues to gather forensic, ballistic and witness evidence to piece together the final moments inside the Bultfontein home – and to determine criminal liability for a police operation that ended with an entire family and one of their own lying dead.
