Three-Year-Old Girl Raped in Muizenberg; Suspect Arrested
MUIZENBERG – A three-year-old girl was raped on March 3 in the Capricorn area, Muizenberg SAPS confirmed. The alleged perpetrator has been arrested and remanded in custody pending further legal proceedings.
Wayne Turner of the Muizenberg Community Policing Forum (CPF) said the incident reportedly took place between 6pm and 10pm.
He urged residents to report any sexual crimes involving children immediately, stressing that early reporting is critical to protecting victims, preserving evidence, and ensuring offenders are brought to justice.
While Turner described the incident as rare in the Capricorn area, the director of Where Rainbows Meet, Mymoena Scholtz, said similar cases have occurred before.
She said: “Working in communities like Muizenberg and surrounding areas, it’s clear that systemic gaps persist.”
Scholtz highlighted a series of challenges facing vulnerable children, including limited access to support services, inadequate training for authorities, power imbalances, and mistrust of officials.
“There is a lack of awareness and education on recognising and reporting abuse, insufficient accountability on reported cases, and fragmented services with poor coordination among stakeholders," she said. “There is no unity in communities. There is a power struggle instead of combating crime together."
She also said current support systems fail to protect vulnerable children.
“There are limited resources and capacity for specialised support services, fragmented coordination among providers, inadequate trauma-informed training, and insufficient accountability for perpetrators and support for survivors,” Scholtz said.
Police confirmed their investigation is ongoing.
The rape has sent shockwaves through the Muizenberg community, with many expressing their anger and concern over the safety of children in the area. The incident has also highlighted the need for improved child protection measures and greater awareness of sexual abuse.
Community leaders are calling for increased resources for support services and better coordination among stakeholders to ensure that vulnerable children receive the protection they need. They are also urging residents to be vigilant and report any suspected cases of abuse to the authorities.
The police have assured the public that they are taking the investigation seriously and will do everything in their power to bring the perpetrator to justice. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of protecting children from harm and the need for a collective effort to combat sexual abuse in all its forms.
