The Easter weekend commenced with a brutal act of mob justice in Bonteheuwel on Friday afternoon, as a man was stoned and stabbed to death in broad daylight. The incident, which unfolded in Redberry Street, has cast a grim shadow over the community, highlighting the volatile nature of vigilante actions.
Eyewitness accounts suggest the victim was initially involved in a shooting incident in Kalksteenfontein. He was reportedly chased by an enraged crowd to Bonteheuwel, where the violent confrontation culminated in his death.
An anonymous eyewitness, who observed the horrific event, described a scene of overwhelming force. “Apparently, he shot and wounded two people in different areas, then the community from those areas chased him,” the witness explained. “He ran to this side and ran into one of the people’s yards, but the mob pulled him out and stabbed him and stoned him to death.”
The sheer scale of the attack was staggering. The witness further elaborated, stating, “There were more than 40 people who attacked him. The incident took place just after twelve noon, it was broad daylight.” The brutality of the assault was underscored by the use of heavy objects: “They attacked him all over his body, they took slabs of concrete and threw it on him. It was horrible to witness something like that.”
The victim’s identity was later confirmed by his mother and two sisters, who arrived at the scene. It is believed he had affiliations with gangsterism, though the specifics remain unconfirmed. The witness added, “His mother and his two sisters came to the scene to identify the body, apparently he was involved in gangsterism. We do not know the people.”
Medical personnel, arriving swiftly, assessed the victim but tragically declared him deceased at the scene. The large number of assailants presented a significant challenge for law enforcement. “When police came, they could not arrest anyone because they did not know who was responsible, because they were such a large group,” the eyewitness recounted.
Another source, speaking to the Daily Voice, corroborated parts of the narrative and shed light on a crucial detail regarding the victim’s weapon. “The deceased shot at a group of people, and they started chasing him. When he got here, they got him and stof’d him af,” the source revealed. This individual also noted the youthfulness of the attackers: “They were jong laaities who attacked him.” Intriguingly, the source mentioned the recovery of the victim’s firearm by the mob: “I cannot say if they are all gangsters or if his bullets were finished because when they got to him, they rukked his gun and said, ‘dis os gun’.”
Upon arrival, police cordoned off the area, where stones and bricks were found scattered around the body, serving as stark evidence of the violent nature of the killing.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that a murder investigation has been launched. “Bishop Lavis police registered a murder case for investigation following an incident on Redberry Road, Bonteheuwel, in which an unknown adult male was fatally injured,” Twigg reported. He further detailed the initial findings: “According to reports, police members attended the crime scene where they found the victim with multiple injuries to his body. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation, and arrests are yet to be made.”
Authorities are now appealing to the public for assistance. “Police are appealing to anyone with any information about this incident to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the mobile application MySAPS anonymously,” Sergeant Twigg urged.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by communities grappling with crime and the dangerous recourse to mob justice, where individuals take the law into their own hands, often with tragic and unpunished consequences. The lack of arrests in such a high-profile case raises questions about accountability and the effectiveness of law enforcement in situations involving large, anonymous groups.
