A 46-year-old woman was found dead inside a deep freezer at her own home in Upington, Northern Cape, on Tuesday, in an incident police say is now under investigation.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the woman was first reported missing by her husband at around 10am, prompting an immediate search after concerns were raised about her whereabouts.

The report came in early in the day, and police moved quickly, launching a coordinated search of the woman’s residence as well as the surrounding areas.

SAPS said her body was discovered later on the same day inside a deep freezer that was located in a storeroom at the property.

“Her body was discovered inside a deep freezer located in a storeroom at their residence on the same day,” the police said.

Police have not yet publicly confirmed what may have led to her death, and the circumstances surrounding how and why she ended up in the freezer are not known at this stage.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death, while investigators continue gathering information and piecing together the events leading up to the discovery.

“All information and reports will form part of the ongoing investigation that is currently underway,” SAPS added.

Police say the death has triggered a broader inquiry, with detectives working to establish the sequence of events—from the moment the woman was reported missing to the time her body was found in the freezer.

Authorities are also urging members of the public to come forward if they can assist with the investigation. SAPS said people with any information should contact the Upington Detective Unit.

The incident has sent shock and disbelief through the community in Upington, where residents are now waiting for updates from investigators, including the findings of the autopsy.

For the moment, police are keeping details limited, but they have stressed that the case is active and that information from the public could prove important as the investigation continues.

Anyone who has relevant information is asked to report it to the Upington Detective Unit to assist with establishing what happened in this case.
