Durban – Two individuals wanted in connection with a brazen cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery that occurred in Verulam on Monday have been killed in a dramatic shootout with KwaZulu-Natal police in Edenvale. The incident unfolded during an early morning police operation, according to police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda.
The Verulam robbery, which took place at the corner of Jabu Ngcobo and Fairview roads, involved at least 12 suspects who brought the cash delivery truck to a standstill. According to Netshiunda, the suspects allegedly robbed security guards of their three firearms before fleeing the scene with an undisclosed amount of money. The audacious nature of the heist prompted an immediate and intensive investigation by law enforcement.
"On Monday afternoon, at least 12 suspects robbed a cash-in-transit vehicle at the corner of Jabu Ngcobo and Fairview roads in Verulam. The suspects brought the cash delivery truck to a standstill and allegedly robbed security guards of their three firearms before fleeing from the scene with an undisclosed amount of money," Netshiunda stated.
Acting on intelligence gathered just after midnight on Tuesday, police determined that some of the suspects involved in the CIT heist were hiding in Edendale. This information was immediately put into action, with officers swiftly moving to apprehend the suspects.
"The intelligence was put into operation, and when police arrived at the house in which the suspects were hiding, a shootout ensued between police and the suspects," Netshiunda explained. The confrontation quickly escalated, resulting in a deadly exchange of gunfire.
During the shootout, two suspects were shot and fatally wounded. A third suspect narrowly evaded arrest and remains at large. The scene was secured, and police conducted a thorough search of the premises.
