MK Party Members Targeted in Double Shooting at Dube Hostel, Soweto
Soweto was rocked by violence on Sunday as members of the uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) Party were targeted in two separate shooting incidents at the Dube hostel. The opposition party reports that the attacks occurred during a recruitment drive, leaving one member dead and two others injured.
The first incident took place in the afternoon as MK Party members were conducting their recruitment drive. According to the party, "Two members, a male and female, were shot and taken to hospital." The female victim is currently in critical condition at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, while the male member received treatment and has since been discharged.
Tragedy struck again when another MK Party member, who had been assisting in transporting the wounded to the hospital, was ambushed while on his way to the Meadowlands police station to report the initial shooting. He was shot multiple times and died at the scene.
Police have confirmed that murder and attempted murder cases are now under investigation. The MK Party has stated its intention to report the attacks to the Electoral Commission of South Africa, highlighting concerns about political intimidation and violence.
In a strongly worded statement, the MK Party declared, "As the MK Party, we unequivocally state there will be no 'no-go zones' in Gauteng or anywhere else in the country. We will not yield to acts of political intolerance and intimidation."
