Ekurhuleni Police Chief Takes Special Leave Amid Allegations Involving Controversial Businessman

Acting head of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), Julius Mkhwanazi, has had his special leave application approved, stepping away from his position amid allegations of questionable conduct that allegedly benefitted controversial businessman Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala.

Ekurhuleni spokesperson Phakamile Mbengashe confirmed Mkhwanazi’s leave on Thursday. “Mr Mkhwanazi applied for special leave and it has been approved,” Mbengashe told The Citizen.

The revelations about Mkhwanazi emerged last week, highlighting his close association with Matlala, who is currently in police custody facing multiple charges. Reports have linked Mkhwanazi to the businessman through a dubious blue light authorisation and alleged attempts to cover up the incident.

Mkhwanazi has denied any wrongdoing, stating that the allegations are unfounded and have not undergone investigation. “These allegations are unfounded and have not been investigated,” he told ENCA on Thursday morning. He also vowed to challenge the claims through the proper channels.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) previously called for Mkhwanazi’s suspension, stating that the EMPD required “ethical and honest leadership” in the wake of the allegations. The party had submitted an urgent motion in this regard on Tuesday.

Mkhwanazi’s name came up during testimony at the Madlanga Commission, which is probing criminality, political interference, and corruption in law enforcement. He was specifically mentioned in connection with a 2023 incident in which Matlala was allegedly granted blue lights for his personal vehicles.

Matlala remains in custody and was denied bail last week. He is scheduled to appear in court again on 7 October, facing charges including conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, and money laundering. The Alexandra Magistrate’s Court cited Matlala’s substantial resources and the seriousness of the charges as reasons for considering him a flight risk and a potential danger to society.

As Mkhwanazi steps away from his role, the EMPD faces heightened scrutiny over leadership integrity and its association with high-profile individuals involved in criminal investigations.
