KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) residents and travellers are being urged to exercise caution and prepare for a week of intermittent rain and potentially adverse weather conditions, according to the South African Weather Service (Saws).
The weather service has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for the midlands and south-western regions of the province. A more severe Yellow Level 4 warning is in effect for the northern areas, including Durban, Ladysmith, KwaDukuza, Mandeni, and Newcastle, along with surrounding areas. Additionally, a Yellow Level 1 warning has been issued for damaging winds stretching from Durban to Kosi Bay on Wednesday.
Speaking on Wednesday, forecaster Sihle Dlamini outlined the expected weather patterns for the coming days. "It’s not recommended to drive at high speed because the roads are really slippery,” he stated, emphasising the importance of cautious driving due to slippery road conditions.
From Thursday onwards, intermittent rain is anticipated. Wednesday saw an 80% chance of rain tapering to a 60% chance in the extreme north of KZN, dropping to about 30% in Durban and surrounding areas. Dlamini warned that on Thursday morning, areas such as Dumbe, Vryheid, and Umhlabuyalingana would experience up to a 60% chance of rain, dropping to 30% or less later.
Friday brings a brief respite, promising sunshine and dry conditions throughout KZN. However, this will be short-lived as by Saturday, the possibility of rain returns with a 30% chance in the province, particularly in the north-eastern sections.
Sunday will see the potential for rain re-emerge, with Dlamini suggesting a 30% likelihood over the northern regions. This could culminate in worsening conditions on Monday, where forecasts indicate a 60% chance of rain, with possibilities of escalation to 80%.
Dlamini said the damp weather is linked to a cold front passing through the province, followed by a high-pressure system bringing in increased moisture.
In light of these forecasts, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi has called on residents to exercise caution as the province is expected to experience adverse weather conditions throughout the week.
Department spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila said the expected rainfall may result in flooding of roads and low-lying settlements, damage to homes and public infrastructure, disruption of essential services, and increased risk to human and animal life. He added that provincial traffic officials will monitor key routes to support safe travel.
Buthelezi has activated disaster management teams across the province to respond to any incidents that may arise. “We are working closely with municipalities to ensure that our disaster response mechanisms are ready and responsive. Communities are urged to follow official updates and take all necessary precautions to protect lives and property,” said the MEC. He said residents in vulnerable areas, including those near riverbeds, informal settlements, and individuals with limited mobility, are encouraged to take proactive safety measures.
The department said the provincial Disaster Management Centre is coordinating with local municipalities to ensure readiness and rapid response. Mzila emphasised that the weather conditions may change rapidly.
As one of the regions impacted, eThekwini Municipality said the city’s Disaster Management Directorate and emergency services remain on standby. The city advised residents to exercise caution, stay indoors if possible, and avoid travelling unless necessary. Residents living in flood-prone areas, including informal settlements, are advised to take the necessary safety precautions, said the municipality.
“The public is reminded not to cross swollen rivers and streams, especially where water is above ankle level,” it said. In case of an emergency, the public can contact the city’s Disaster Management Centre on 031 361 0000.
