Sisters Killed in Tragic Crash Were Returning from Cousin's Graduation
JOHANNESBURG – Two sisters, Cassidy (23) and Connor Moodley (25), from Johannesburg, have tragically died in a car crash in the Northern Cape. The devastating incident occurred while the sisters were returning home from their cousin’s university graduation in Cape Town.
People across the country continue to keep the Moodley family, including the third sister, Storm Moodley (27), in their thoughts and prayers following the tragic accident.
Speaking to IOL, their uncle and family spokesperson, Lance Poonawassy, said the loss was a devastating blow to the small and close-knit family. He explained that his nieces had driven to Cape Town specifically to celebrate a major milestone.
“It was my son’s graduation at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). We had such a wonderful day celebrating. They are just five cousins, we’re quite a small family, and they really wanted to celebrate with him, and drove to Cape Town,” he explained.
Poonawassy confirmed that the accident occurred in the Klein Karoo, approximately 30 kilometres outside of Britstown, as the sisters were headed back to Johannesburg. He also provided a critical update on the third sister, Storm, who had been in a critical condition in hospital.
"Storm will be recovering at home. She is a bit battered and bruised, but she is home,” he said.
The cause of the accident is not yet known, as the investigation remains ongoing. However, Poonawassy confirmed that there was no suspicion of any foul play. “At this stage, there is no cause for the accident yet, and the investigation remains ongoing. But, I can say there has been no foul play,” he said.
The mother of three sisters involved in a tragic weekend car accident has issued a heartfelt message, confirming the devastating loss of two of her daughters. In a message posted on her Facebook page, Janene Moodley thanked the public for their support while confirming that her daughters, Cassidy and Connor Moodley, were killed in a crash near Victoria West.
"On behalf of myself, Storm, and our family, I would like to express our deepest gratitude for the outpouring of love and support we have received during this incredibly difficult time," she wrote. "We are devastated by the tragic loss of our beloved Cassidy and Connor in a motor accident near Victoria West in the Karoo."
In her message, Janene Moodley shared the difficult journey the family has endured since the accident. "The past two days have been unimaginable, as our family travelled to the Karoo to attend to matters with Storm in hospital, and make the necessary arrangements to bring Connor and Cassidy home to Johannesburg, with the care of our trusted funeral directors [sic].”
The family has also requested privacy during this time as they grieve. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, and Poonawassy has stated that there are no signs of any foul play.
