Belhar – A Delft father was fatally shot in Belhar yesterday morning, just after 7am, moments after dropping off his two young children at their crèche. The incident occurred in front of the Logos Assembly of God Church, leaving the family reeling in shock and grief.

Grant Stephens, 35, of Roosendal in Delft, had accompanied his wife to the Kids World ECD, located on the church premises, to drop off their two sons before heading to work. As they emerged from the crèche, an unidentified gunman approached Grant and opened fire, hitting him in the head and body.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that Belhar detectives are investigating a murder case. "Belhar police responded to a complaint of a shooting in Drake Street, Belhar, on Wednesday morning, 20 August 2025, at about 07:50. Upon arrival on the scene they found a 35-year-old male who sustained gunshot wounds to his head and body," Twigg stated. "The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. According to reports the victim dropped of his children when he was approached by a unknown suspect who shot him before fleeing the scene. The motive for the attack forms part of the police investigation."

The news has devastated Grant’s family. His father, Saul Stephens, described the family’s trauma, highlighting Grant as a dedicated family man and a hard worker.

A heartbroken Saul explained: “He drops his children every day at the creche because it is on his way to work. After he and his wife dropped off their children at creche, as they came out, a jong just came on foot and started shooting him. His wife did not get hurt, I believe she fell flat."

Saul added, "I don’t know what possessed that guy to shoot Grant because he was never involved in any gangsterism or trouble. He was married and went to work everyday. When he was not working, he was at home spending time with his family. This incident has left us all traumatised.”

The motive behind the attack remains unknown, and police are appealing to the public for any information that could assist in their investigation.

Rose Abrahams, Deputy Public Relations Officer for the Belhar Community Police Forum, expressed the community’s distress: “The CPF and the community is traumatised by this horrendous act and pray for the perpetrators to be brought to justice speedily. A murder case is under investigation and at this stage we don't know the motive however any person with information can contact Belhar SAPS.”
