No marriage for Robert Marawa who was accused of impregnating Generations actress Zoe Mthiyane

IT PULLS at heartstrings to hear radio and TV host, Robert Marawa, talk fondly about fatherhood. For years, his name was dragged in the mud for allegedly being a deadbeat father. Reports alleged that he was not doing enough to support his child.

His baby mama, Generations – The Legacy actress, Zoe Mthiyane, who was engaged to The Lion King producer Lebo M at the time, took Robert to court for maintenance. Robert found closure when the court ruled in his favour.

“That’s tabloid stuff which I can’t get into,” he says. “Go to Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court and you’ll get the answer there because that was solved without a problem. They lost the case. They wouldn’t have lost the case if whatever they were saying was true. You know I’m not silly like that. I don’t have kids and then dump them. You know it’s not me.”

Talking about his son, a smitten Robert talks about how Awande has brought so much joy in his life.

“My son is in Grade 1. Recently they were doing their end-of-year presentation with all the parents in attendance. The minute I walked in, the whole stage was full of Grade 1s and the hall full of parents. The first person I saw in that whole crowd was him and he was looking at me. Just to see that, I smiled. The innocence that was there, tjo! There’s no greater joy,” he says.

Robert adds that his son reminds him of himself. “I just think that you almost see a reflection of yourself through your child. And, because I also never had a brother – I was the only son among three girls in the family – he almost becomes not just a son but also a brother,” he explains.

Robert, who has a very busy schedule, still finds time to bond with his son over watching soccer. He says they also love having lunch and doing homework together when his schedule allows. “He took a liking to soccer when he was just a little kid. There’s a screen-grab that I’ve always had of him. I think he was probably a year going on two years and the first thing he wanted to do was just kick a ball,” he says. “Seeing him grow up and still have the love for football is great.”

Robert adds, “I just want him to be the best that he can be in whatever he chooses to focus on in life. Right now, it’s about giving him opportunities. It’s about being involved in different facets of life, sport or extra murals and then somehow he’ll find his niche. He’ll find what he likes to do.”

Does he foresee getting married? Robert says that’s for the universe to decide. “I don’t know. I’m not at all anti-marriage. My parents were married for 52 years. They were a good example of the fact that it can work regardless of any adversity.”
