THEY were once an It couple and their star- studded wedding was featured on Mzansi Magic’s reality show Diski Divas. She was solidly on her way to becoming a celebrity and he was on the fast track to international soccer stardom.
Then it all crumbled, with rumours of affairs, past lovers resurfacing and pregnancy. Within a couple of years golden couple Tokelo Rantie ( 29) and Gaoitswe “Gigi” Pule ( 27) had separated.
Now former Bafana Bafana player Tokelo has allegedly moved on from the marriage and is reportedly dating Gigi’s former best friend, Sibongile Khote.
Cracks started to show in the union of Tokelo and Gigi, who married in 2015 and have a son, when it was alleged the soccer player had impregnated his ex-girlfriend, Noma Mchunu. Noma denied the allegations – the child was her fiancé’s, she told us at the time, and she wasn’t interested in pursuing a relationship with Tokelo anymore.
Almost a year later Gigi and Tokelo are still legally married, Gigi’s lawyer Shaheen Bhyat tells DRUM, but are in the process of finalising their judicial separation. “At this moment the divorce is still pending. The parties still need to resolve a few matters in court.”
Bhyat says they aren’t yet sure when Gigi and Tokelo will reach an agreement and sign on the dotted line. “As we all know divorce takes time and we can’t as yet give details on who has full custody of the child and who gets what.”
Gigi claims she is unfazed by the collapse of her marriage and rumours her ex is seeing her former BFF.
“At the moment I’m focusing on raising my son and building my career. I’m working on myself,” she says. “I’m doing the best that I can one day at a time.” That’s all she’s prepared to say, she stresses, adding she’ll share more “in due course”.
“People have been very negative towards me during this whole thing and I just want to channel my energy towards my professional life and business ventures,” she adds. “All I can say right now is that I am happy.”
HOWEVER, sources close to the couple say Gigi was not unfazed by Tokelo’s cheating, which became too much for her early on in their marriage. “There’s no saving it now,” one friend says. “The marriage is finished. Gigi is not there anymore, she has moved on.”
The friend says a lot has happened “and it all involves other women”. “There was the Noma chick that was pregnant, then Sibongile who was Gigi’s best friend – I don’t know yazi. I actually don’t want to comment much.”
Gigi has now isolated herself, another insider says. “She doesn’t want friends anymore because we all talk too much.”
One issue holding up the couple’s divorce is a farm the pair bought in Parys on the banks of the Vaal River after they got married. “The farm is worth more than R1 million and they have been fighting over who will get the land,” the friend says.
The pal adds the couple own livestock and vegetables, which are part of the legal battle. With Tokelo having played overseas for a few years, Gigi has been the one tending the farm on her own.
“She’s been taking care of everything – the employees, the animals, the crops, everything. I don’t know, maybe she deserves the farm,” she says.
The friend tells DRUM Gigi travels almost two hours daily to make sure the farm is well taken care of.
“She lives in Midrand and goes to the farm every day around 6 am. In the evening she drives back to Joburg to make sure her child is well taken care of, so she is not willing to let go of the farm because she has invested her time and money in it.”
The friend stresses Gigi doesn’t care about fame anymore and is into other businesses. “She’s doing really well for herself, she goes to the gym every day, takes care of the farm and is doing some construction work.”
TOKELO recently joined Cape Town City FC after a stint playing for Turkish team Gençlerbirligi SK. Cape Town City FC coach Benni McCarthy announced the Free State-born footballer’s move to his team as a striker. In an interview with Goal magazine McCarthy, who is also Tokelo’s former Orlando Pirates teammate, said he was one of the best strikers in the country.
“At his best he is unstoppable. He hit a little rough patch as everybody does in life – even the great Richard Branson,” Benni added.
It’s barely been a month since Tokelo’s return to the country and he’s already hogging headlines. He’s so far remained mum on the allegations he’s dating his ex-wife’s best friend.
Tokelo isn’t keen on talking about his personal life, he says, and wants to focus all his attention on his skills on the pitch. “I’m concentrating on being the best in the game of football. I don’t want to be the best at gossip stories.”
Another former friend of the couple tells us Gigi tried to make the marriage work but nothing was going her way.
“We were shocked when we heard Tokelo and Sibongile had been dating. I thought they were friends,” she says.
“Sibongile and Gigi were best friends, everyone knows that.” The friend says Sibongile and Gigi have been friends for over eight years and they had been pursuing some business ventures together.
“Sibongile is not even TK’s type – he likes girls with weaves, glamorous girls, you know?” The friend says Gigi found out about the alleged relationship from the newspapers.
“I don’t want to believe Sibongile would go that far.”
Sibongile confirmed to DRUM she and Tokelo were in a relationship. “Yes, we are dating,” she says. “We have been together for under a year but I don’t want to talk about my personal life.
“I am not friends with Gigi,” she adds. “I know he is going through a divorce but no one is perfect. Everyone has a history.”
