Actress and model Asavela Mqokiyana’s case has been postponed to 26 November 2026 for further investigation after she was allegedly caught driving at 198km/h on KwaZulu-Natal’s N2 freeway.

Mqokiyana appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on Thursday in connection with the speeding charge.

The Road Traffic Inspectorate team from Park Rynie arrested her after she was allegedly clocked travelling at 198km/h in a BMW X3 SUV in a 120km/h zone.

The actress first appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on 19 October.

The matter was postponed during Thursday’s appearance while investigations continue.

The charge has not been tested in court, and Mqokiyana is presumed innocent unless convicted.

Actress conceals identity outside court

After Thursday’s court proceedings, Mqokiyana reportedly used her attorney’s gown and a hat to conceal her identity before making her way to her BMW and leaving the court premises.

The unusual exit attracted attention as the actress attempted to avoid being recognised outside the courthouse.

The court did not make a final determination in the matter. Instead, the case was postponed to allow investigators to complete their work.

The Department of Transport has alleged that Mqokiyana was driving at almost 80km/h above the posted speed limit when the RTI team stopped her.

The alleged speed of 198km/h places the matter among the more serious speeding cases dealt with during the province’s intensified traffic operations.

Arrest followed N2 speed check

The arrest was carried out by RTI officials from Park Rynie, who were conducting enforcement operations along the N2.

The road has heavy traffic during holiday periods and is regularly monitored for speeding, drunk driving, unroadworthy vehicles and other offences.

According to the Department of Transport, Mqokiyana was allegedly driving a BMW X3 when the vehicle was recorded travelling at 198km/h.

The speed limit in the area was 120km/h.

The matter will now return to court on 26 November, when the State is expected to provide an update on the investigation.

Further evidence may include the speed-measuring device’s records, the RTI officers’ statements, the vehicle details and the circumstances surrounding the stop and arrest.

The prosecution will ultimately have to prove the charge in court.

Mqokiyana’s entertainment career

Mqokiyana is the daughter of well-known football coach Manqoba Mngqithi.

She became widely known for playing Ntwenhle in the popular television drama Isibaya, a role she held from 2018 to 2021.

She later played Amogelang in the second season of Abomama and appeared as Sizakele in Uzalo.

In addition to her entertainment career, Mqokiyana is reportedly involved in business interests including construction and poultry farming.

Her appearance in the speeding case has attracted public attention because of her profile as an actress and model, but the legal proceedings will focus on the alleged traffic offence and the evidence gathered by the RTI.

Transport MEC warns motorists

KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Siboniso Duma has warned that traffic authorities will show no mercy to motorists who break the law during the festive season.

He said Mqokiyana’s arrest should remind drivers that the #NenzaniLaEzweni Operation remains in full force.

The operation involves multidisciplinary enforcement activities aimed at reducing road deaths and targeting dangerous driving, drunk driving, unlicensed motorists and vehicles operating without the necessary permits.

Duma said the RTI and Operation Shanela teams recorded significant enforcement figures between 15 and 21 October.

During that period, officials reported:

•
421 speeding charges;

•
12,073 vehicles stopped;

•
1,719 motorists charged;

•
87 motorists charged with driving without licences;

•
141 motorists charged with failing to wear seatbelts;

•
112 unlicensed vehicles identified; and

•
140 vehicles impounded for having no permits.

The figures form part of the province’s broader road-safety campaign during the busy festive-season period.

More operations planned

Duma said the department planned to conduct more than 26 #NenzaniLaEzweni multidisciplinary operations before 28 October.

The operations would target motorists who drive recklessly, operate vehicles illegally or place other road users at risk.

“We will have a further 15 operations focusing on drunk driving,” he warned.

The warning comes as traffic officials prepare for increased volumes on major routes, including the N2, during the festive season.

Speeding remains a major concern because vehicles travelling at extreme speeds give drivers less time to react and increase the severity of crashes.

Traffic authorities say enforcement operations are aimed not only at issuing fines but also at preventing fatal collisions and removing dangerous vehicles from the road.

Case to return in November

Mqokiyana’s alleged speed of 198km/h was recorded in a 120km/h zone, according to the Department of Transport.

She was arrested by the RTI team from Park Rynie and has now appeared in court twice.

The matter has been postponed to 26 November for further investigation, and no final outcome has been reached.

As the case proceeds, investigators will continue examining the speed reading and the circumstances surrounding the alleged offence.

Mqokiyana remains entitled to the presumption of innocence while the State prepares its case.

The prosecution will have to prove the allegation beyond a reasonable doubt if the matter proceeds to trial.

The case comes as KwaZulu-Natal traffic officials intensify their festive-season crackdown, with the MEC warning motorists that further speeding and drunk-driving operations are already planned.
