A long‑distance bus travelling from Cape Town to Johannesburg overturned on the N1 near Trompsburg in the Free State on Thursday night, killing 12 people — including children — and leaving 66 others injured.
The crash, which occurred shortly after 9.30pm, has once again highlighted the dangers on South Africa’s major national routes, particularly during overnight travel.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) confirmed the tragedy on Friday morning, while provincial emergency services worked through the night to rescue passengers and clear the wreckage.
Bus Overturned, Passengers Trapped
Free State Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were among the first responders at the scene, about 24km north of Trompsburg in the direction of Edenburg.
According to the Free State Department of Health, the bus was found lying across the N1, obstructing the roadway. Multiple fatalities and injuries were immediately apparent.
Department spokesperson Mondli Mvambi said the scale of the incident required urgent intervention.
“Emergency services have been activated and are on scene. Law enforcement is on scene and managing the incident.”
EMS personnel discovered 14 injured passengers outside the bus upon arrival, while others — including children — were trapped beneath the overturned vehicle.
“11 people are reported as deceased so far – 5 children and 6 adults – their gender and identities cannot be fully determined at this stage.”
Triage and extrication efforts continued through the night as paramedics worked to stabilise the injured and transport them to nearby hospitals.
By Friday morning, the RTMC confirmed that the death toll had risen to 12.
66 Injured, Investigation Under Way
RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane said emergency services had responded swiftly to the crash.
“Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, where 66 passengers also sustained injuries and were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment.”
The injured were taken to various hospitals in the Free State for medical care. The extent of their injuries has not yet been fully detailed.
Zwane confirmed that the RTMC crash investigation team had been deployed to determine what led to the bus overturning.
“Preliminary investigations are underway, and no conclusions will be drawn until all evidence has been examined.”
Authorities have not yet indicated whether weather conditions, mechanical failure, driver fatigue or other factors may have contributed to the collision.
Motorists Warned of Delays
The crash caused significant disruption along the N1 corridor between Trompsburg and Edenburg, one of the country’s busiest long‑distance routes linking the Western Cape and Gauteng.
With the bus lying across the roadway, traffic officials were forced to divert vehicles where possible.
The Free State EMS cautioned motorists travelling in the area to be vigilant.
“Traffic officials are diverting vehicles where possible. Road users are advised to use alternative routes.”
The department urged drivers to reduce speed and remain alert as emergency crews continued working at the scene.
Zwane echoed the call for caution.
He said motorists were urged to exercise extreme caution when travelling through the area and to follow all instructions from law enforcement officers managing the scene.

As news of the crash spread, authorities extended their sympathies to the families of those who lost loved ones.
“The RTMC extends its heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured.”
Similarly, Mvambi conveyed a message of sympathy from the provincial health department.
“We extend our sincere condolences to the families of those who have lost loved ones and wish a speedy recovery to all the injured,” Mvambi said.
At this stage, the identities of the deceased have not been formally released, pending notification of next of kin.
