At least 16 people have died in a devastating bus crash on the N1 near Touws River in the Western Cape in the early hours of Thursday morning, 3 July 2026.

The bus, which was travelling from Cape Town to Idutywa in the Eastern Cape, overturned shortly after midnight.

Bus Swerved Before Overturning

Western Cape traffic chief Maxine Bezuidenhout confirmed the crash occurred at about 12am.

“We confirm an incident on the N1 near Touws River at approximately 12am on Thursday, where a bus transporting 73 South African residents has overturned,” she said.

“Tragically, 16 people have lost their lives, while two others sustained serious injuries.”

According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), it is alleged that the driver swerved to avoid colliding with a delivery vehicle, lost control and the bus overturned.

RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane said:

“It is alleged that the bus swerved to avoid colliding with a delivery vehicle when the driver lost control and the vehicle overturned.

“The crash resulted in 16 fatalities, 20 occupants sustained injuries and were transported to Worcester Hospital.

“The cause of the crash will be subject to the ongoing investigation by the RTMC and the South African Police Service.”

Conflicting Passenger Figures

Police indicated that preliminary information suggested the bus was transporting 78 passengers, while traffic authorities reported 73 people on board.

Western Cape police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut said officers and emergency personnel responded to the scene at approximately 12.45am.

“Preliminary information indicates that a bus transporting 78 passengers from Cape Town to the Eastern Cape overturned. No other vehicles were involved in the incident,” Traut said.

He confirmed that 15 passengers were initially declared dead at the scene — a figure later updated to 16.

“The fatalities comprise seven adult males, five adult females and three children,” Traut added.

Several other passengers sustained injuries of varying severity and were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

Traffic Disruptions

A stop-and-go system has been implemented on the affected stretch of the N1 as emergency and recovery operations continue.

Bezuidenhout urged motorists to exercise caution.

“Expect delays as emergency and recovery operations continue,” she said.

Western Cape Police management confirmed that the circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.
