DiepCity Star Chrispen Nyathi Faces Backlash Over Social Media Post About “Working While Others Sleep”
DiepCity actor Chrispen Nyathi has come under fire after a social media post appeared to flaunt his working life while others struggle to find opportunities.
The Zimbabwean actor, widely recognised for his role as Pastor Charleston Ncube on Mzansi Magic’s drama series DiepCity, posted on his Facebook page: “Sisemsebenzini, wena usalele [I’m working while you are still sleeping]. But you expect things to change.”
The post sparked immediate backlash from fans, many of whom argued that they, too, would like to work but are held back by unemployment and lack of opportunities.
Fans quickly reprimanded him for the post’s tone. Asanda Mellz commented: “Soon you’ll be asking for donations from us.” Nyathi responded: “God forbid, that will not and never shall be my reality. God himself has set up structures for me not to find myself there.”
Other followers shared their concern about the post’s seeming insensitivity. Joyful Mncube remarked: “Maybe if you used different words or rearranged them. I can imagine how it sits on someone who is trying so hard every day but not getting a break.” Gasela added: “My dear brother, please when the gigs run dry on your side, remember this post. Our situations are different. His favour doesn’t locate us all at the same time. I doubt that all of those who are still sleeping have been presented with opportunities and shrugged them off. I come in peace. Keep working hard.”
Nyathi later clarified his own struggles, explaining that the past year had not been easy. “To be honest with you, things have really been dry this year,” he wrote. “I haven’t received a single contract of a shoot that lasted more than four days. But I get and try and make life work.”
Despite his explanation, some followers maintained that his initial post appeared insensitive to the hardships faced by those battling unemployment and economic challenges.
Nyathi began his career in theatre before transitioning to television, earning recognition for his portrayal of Pastor Charleston Ncube in DiepCity. His performances have won him multiple awards, including the Viewer’s Choice Award for Best Actor at the Royalty Soapie Awards in 2021 and Best Supporting Actor in 2024.
The actor frequently shares personal reflections and career updates on social media. While his candid posts offer insight into the realities of life in the entertainment industry, they occasionally ignite public debate.
Nyathi’s latest post has once again highlighted the fine line public figures must navigate when discussing success, work, and personal achievements, particularly in a country facing high unemployment and economic disparity.
