Those close to Lia Meyer, the young student accused of racially insulting IdolsSA judge Somizi Mhlongo and calling him gay have come out to defend her.
Lia became a topic of discussion on Twitter earlier this week, after a racial tweet from her account went viral.
“Isn’t Somizi like a homosexual k******ketjie?,” read the tweet.
Lia later returned to Twitter claiming her account had been hacked but that did not stop Somizi from calling in Twitter detectives to hunt her down.
Taking to Instagram, one of her friends, Hannah Gauche slammed Somizi for inciting violence.
She said that Lia was innocent and that she hoped when the truth comes out, Somizi will have the decency to apologise publicly.
“It is against the law to incite violence against someone. Just as against the law as racism. The slander that has been directed against Lia is completely unforgiveable.
“I agree that racism is unjust but it needs to be dealt with in a proper legal way not on the kangaroo court that is social media,” she said.
Hannah added that Lia’s reputation and future was tarnished because of the debacle, and maintained that she was innocent.
According to Netwerk24, Lia is apparently under sedation following the incident.
Somizi told followers on Twitter that he would not be letting the incident go and that “racists belong in jail”.
