Prokid's side chick speaks out: I always perform a ritual while playing his music


When rapper Linda Mkhize popularly known as Prokid died of a hemosuccus pancreaticus, which is a rare cause of gastrointestinal bleeding, South Africa was shocked by his sudden death.

As for his girlfriend, Mandisa Mbanjwa (32) she was completely devastated. She could not get the meaning of life, and how she was going to survive without the man she loved so dearly.

Whenever, she misses him, Mandisa could perform some candle lighting ritual and play his music in consolation. “I always feel like he’ll be waiting for me when I come home,” she recently told Drum magazine.


ProKid died at Mandisa’s three-bedroom flat in the Johannesburg at the age of 37. She still lives in the same apartment, in which her lover breathed his last, and is not ready to move out.

When ProKid died, there was a lot of talk in town, their love relationship came up for discussion, which many viewed as an extra marital affair, basing on the grounds that he was married to Ayanda, his wife.

But Mandisa said she was not his mistress to the rapper. “I was not a nyatsi (side chick) but his queen,” she told Drum, alleging she was setting the record straight. Mandisa claimed that they had been staying together for a year.

As if to try and shield their son had an affair, his family first claimed he died at his friend’s house only for it to be revealed later that he died at his lover’s house. ProKid’s father, Zwelakhe Kheswa allegedly went as far as meeting Mandisa after the funeral as a way to find closure to this sad chapter.

The family is also reported to have carried out a cleansing ritual for Mandisa and took her to his grave two months ago, since she was barred from attending the funeral.

“I know I will have peace one day. I feel strong inside and I am happy that he is resting easy. He will always be my guardian angel. I will never forget him and what we shared. The words he said to me are engraved in my heart. I will forever be grateful that God gave us a chance to be together.” she said expressing a sigh of relief.

At the height of his career, Prokid released six albums, with Heads and Tales album still being recognised as one of the biggest in kasi hip-hop.

He is also remembered for hits such as Ungaphel’ Umoya San, Wozobona, Uthini Ngo Pro, Bhampa and Sekele, among many others.
