Rapper Cassper Nyovest, cricket star Kagiso Rabada and Mamelodi Sundowns ace midfielder Sibusiso “Vila” Vilakazi have been called up to represent South Africa in the inaugural Fifa eNations Stay and Play Cup.
The trio are guest players in the PlayStation competition and will team up with South Africa’s well-known “gamer”, Thabo Moloi, who is the country’s current leading player on the Fifa gaming rankings on PS4.
The 40-nation online tournament is the concept of Fifa with their partners, Electronic Arts – EA Sports – and it has been specifically created for the lockdown period as outdoor football competition remains on hold due to the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.
"We are hoping to add the voice in the fight against the coronavirus by joining Fifa to drive the message of staying at home during this lockdown."
Safa president Danny Jordaan
The SA Football Association (Safa) said it had entered the “eBafana” team in collaboration with its online licence partner Inqaku FC (PTY) Ltd.
The “eNations” competition is designed to encourage football players and fans to stay at home in support of the World Health Organisation’s continued fight against the deadly virus.
South Africa will face the United Arab Emirates in their opening match on Tuesday.
The tournament is broken down into three sections – Africa, Europe and the Middle East – and the winners of each section stands to win a prize money donation, which will in turn be awarded to their chosen national charity organisation.
Bafana have picked the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund as their charity of choice by virtue of the organisation’s longstanding partnership with Safa.
Safa president Danny Jordaan said: “We are hoping to add the voice in the fight against the coronavirus by joining Fifa to drive the message of staying at home during this lockdown. The representatives must feel the same pride as members of our other national teams and have fun while they are spreading the message of observing the lockdown regulations to keep safe.”
