Bafana Bafana’s progression to the African Cup of Nations quarterfinals saw them guarantee a hefty $800,000 windfall for the South African Football Association.
With SAFA having guaranteed the players R520,000 each for reaching the last eight of the AFCON in Egypt, the R11m that they have now secured will come in handy after a solid 1-0 victory over the hosts in Cairo on Saturday.
Just by reaching the finals, SAFA were always going to pick up $475,000 in prize money, while going on to win it – though still a long way away – would be worth a whopping $4,000,000.
As previously reported, the breakdown for the Bafana player bonuses is as follows:
– R320 000 for reaching the last 16
– R520 000 for the quarter-finals
– R670 000 for the semi-finals
– R920 000 for winning the tournament
Now it’s over to Bafana to try and get a result against Nigeria on Wednesday night and reach an AFCON semifinal for the first time since the 2000 AFCON, a result that would subsequently land $1.5m (over R21m) for the association.
Bafana’s win last night was their first in the knockout stages of an AFCON since beating Ghana in February 2000 – also in their own backyard.
