It was a bloody sight to behold as Kenyan worshippers watched a horrific murder-suicide happen in their church recently.
On Sunday a prayer session at Ground for God’s Gospel in the Kenyan coastal city of Mombasa took a turn for the worst as assistant pastor Elisha Misiko fatally stabbed his wife, Ann Mughoi, before slitting his own throat in front of the congregation CNN reported.
Ann Mughoi was the senior pastor of the church for 20 years.
Elisha walked up to his wife with two knives hidden under his shirt and leaned over as if he wanted to whisper something to her, witnesses told local police.
“He walked up to his wife while the church was praying as if he wanted to whisper something to her. Then he took one of the knives and stabbed her (wife) two times. He believed she was dead. He then stabbed himself three times in the stomach and slit his throat,” said Julius Kiragu a sub-county police commander in Mombasa.
The couple’s 20 year union began taking strain two years prior to the incident and had led to the couple separating with Elisha’s wife retaining custody for their four children. This along with allegations of Ann trying to push Elisha out of the church had resulted in the pair having squabbles, in one incident Elisha had even ended up behind bars, according to the Washington Post.
In 2017 Elisha was arrested for allegedly threatening to kill his wife before he was released due to lack of evidence. The following year he allegedly destroyed church equipment and was temporarily banned from the church premises for some time.
In a 17 page suicide letter found after the incident, Elisha details claims of his wife’s infidelity, ploy to defraud him of church property and how she had him arrested on false charges Standard Digital reported.
