At least 4 people have been confirmed dead, while many others were reported to have been wounded following a train collision at Mountain View station, in Pretoria on Tuesday morning.
“I can confirm that there is a train collision in Mountain View and a number of commuters are injured,” said Lillian Mofokeng, Metrorail spokesperson.
“Most unfortunately as a result of the collision and the impact, we had 3 fatalities (now 4) and more than 300 people that were seen by emergency services,” said Mofokeng.
“Numerous passengers were found either in the trains or found walking around on the scene. Paramedics immediately set up a triage area to assess the patients,” said Russel Meiring of ER24 in a statement.
Mofokeng said both trains were travelling in the same direction and on the same track when the incident occurred.
She added that Metrorail was instituting an investigation into what happened and that there will be no train services between Mobapane and Pretoria for the foreseeable future.
