Someone needs to pour cold water on these occupants and officials inside KZN's jails: Yet another 'prison sex scandal' has rocked the province this week.
A male senior official and a female inmate have both been disciplined for contravening the penal code in the most spectacular fashion. The employee has been suspended for his alleged role in the affair, and the prisoner is also facing a rougher time behind bars as a result of these actions – which have been branded ‘disgusting’ by the Justice Ministry.
– On Friday 2 April, a male official was found by a female official – having sexual intercourse with a female offender.
– The 37-year-old Durban official has been with the Westville Female Correctional Centre for 15 years.
– What is more, the prisoner embroiled in this new sex scandal is serving a long-term sentence for murder.
– The Westville employee has been suspended, and the inmate has been transferred to a maximum security facility.
Thulani Mdluli, a spokesperson for the regional authority, confirmed that such relations are classed as ‘unacceptable acts’ by the letter of the law – vowing ‘serious disciplinary action’ against the senior official.
“We have received these disgusting allegations. But it must be clear that if these allegations implicate any official, serious disciplinary actions will be taken against that official, because the departmental Code of Conduct, Resolution 1 of 2006, is against any improper, disgraceful or unacceptable acts by an official while on duty.”
The news comes just days after three people at the centre of a leaked ‘prison sex video’ were hit by the consequences of their actions: Two wardens and an inmate were processed by an unforgiving disciplinary panel at the Ncome Correctional Facility in KZN. Both officials have been dismissed from their roles, and the jailbird was moved to a different location.
The video sent shockwaves across South Africa – and then around the world. The explicit clip spread like wildfire on social media, and was even uploaded to a number of international porn websites. Although no footage of the Westville incident has been unearthed, we expect the same level of condemnation to come from Justice Minister Ronald Lamola.
