The Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (Cata) has called for calm after its president and another man was gunned down on Borcherds Quarry Road.
There were four occupants in the vehicle but only two were killed as a hail of bullets hit the car on Wednesday night.
Cata president Victor Wiwi, 57, was rushed to Gatesville Hospital where he died while Sibusiso Victor Masana, 48, died in the back seat of the black Toyota Fortuner.
Another man was injured in the incident which happened on the N2 off-ramp to Borcherds Quarry near Nyanga.
It is unclear who shot the taxi boss as the police are still investigating.
Cata general secretary Mandla Hermanus has appealed to the public to come forward if they have any information about the shooters.
“We urge the Law Enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned in order to bring the perpetrators of this heinous act to book. We also call on our members to remain calm and to provide any information that may assist the authorities in their investigations.”
He says the association has suffered a great loss: “As Cata we are dismayed and saddened by the shocking killing of our president, Mr. Victor Wiwi, who was ambushed last night (Wednesday) on the N2 freeway near the Cape Town International Airport.
“We condemn this brutal killing of our leader in the strongest possible terms. This loss will be felt by many in the transportation industry in the Western Cape.”
Transport MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela says the incident happened only a few hours after he spoke to Wiwi on the phone.
“He briefed me about a meeting he attended with the Laingsburg Municipality yesterday. We need to get to the bottom of taxi-related killings in our province. I will also visit the family of Mr. Wiwi and the other victims on Saturday to give my personal condolences. I urge Saps to prioritise this case.
“As part of my continued effort to end the current spate of taxi violence in the province, I have called an urgent meeting with the leadership of the Santaco.”
Madikizela described the taxi boss as a respected and soft spoken leader who demonstrated his dedication towards making peace and ending violence.
Saps spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk says Nyanga police are investigating a double murder and an attempted murder case with no arrests made yet.
