TV host speaks on being abducted and abused by seven men

'She is the host of the new compelling TV show, 'To My R@pists, I Thank You'. Gang r@pǝ survivor Palesa Brown describes herself as 'the daughter of the soil' and a beacon of hope. After the most traumatic ordeal of her life, she can achieve anything.

THE ORDEAL

She survived a harrowing gang r@pǝ incident that happened in Rustenburg, North West. She was abducted and r@pǝd at a squatter camp in Tembisa, Johannesburg in 2005. "It happened on the 25th of August to be exact, where seven men r@pǝd me. The saddest part was they were assisted by two women," Palesa tells ZiMoja. She has transformed her traumatic experience into a source of inspiration. Palesa is an author and her book, 'To My Rapist, I Thank You,' serves as the foundation for the TV show, recounting her journey of healing.

HEALING

Every day is different for her healing journey. "We never heal completely as this world is full of triggers," she says. "But I found comfort in knowing I've been given a second chance at life. I share my life story to help those who are finding it difficult to accept their new reality, being r@pǝd completely tampers with your sense of self. I find continuous healing when talking to others," she adds. "All I want is for those who have been through horrific experiences like me to find comfort in knowing that I've walked this journey so I'm able to be that beacon of hope and light so that they know we don't sit in pain forever. The world awaits our healing through our stories," adds the mom of two,

A SURVIVOR

Born in Meadowlands, Soweto but later relocated to Damonsville, Brits in North West, Palesa says there are many misconceptions about r@pǝ victims and survivors. "People need to understand that r@pǝ is something that has been done to you without your consent and it is a crime." Palesa says she wants to provide comprehensive education on r@pǝ. "By providing workshops that offer comprehensive education on gender equality, emphasising the importance of equal rights, opportunities and respect for all individuals. Teaching people about consent and addressing the crucial concept of consent and fostering an understanding of boundaries"
